If I want to find out how much a LTD company has made (or declared!) in the last year, can I just get reports from Companies House (for a £1 each) or should I be looking for something else?

Thanks

You won't know how much a company has made in a given year but it will show their assets and liabilities in the form of a balance sheet. If you are enquiring into a particular company because you want to do business with them or to buy them out then you can ask for copies of their statutory accounts.

You would need to set up an account with Companies House Direct to access this information. You will normally only be able to access abbreviated balance sheet, but it is surprising how many accountants (even the bigger firms) don't bother with these and file the full accounts. You can always tell by looking at the description of the file on CHD before you download it. But remember this is a historical snapshot and will not reflect current profitability / cashflow. For that as has been said you need a credit report

If it is a small co they may have only lodged abridged accounts which will not really show you much about the business. Mainly Balance sheet items not P&L. If you are looking for only one co you may be able to use the free trial with "Fame" www.bvdep.com who provide a company accounts service. You could also try your local Business Link they often offer this service free!
