I need some marketing assistance, this isn't my strongest skill. I'm thinking of forming a company selling industrial pumps for water, fuels etc as this is the industry I am currently in but I am stuck on the name. I want a strong reliable name that tells my customers that not only is the company reliable but the products are also robust and reliable. We will be dealing with a lot of engineering companies and I do not want to seem like a webshop that is just box shifting. It is hard to find a good name where web domains are not already taken, does anyone have any good ideas? Common formats for names are ***** Pumps Ltd, ***** Pumping Solutions Ltd or Pump ***** Ltd.

I would appreciate any help.

Use a made up name.

Don't use the pumps anywhere in the name. You may want to be able to sell filter systems, piping, geo-membranes, valves and other fluid mechanic items and the word 'pumps' ties you down too much.

Jim Smith Fluid Engineering has a nice industrial feel to it.

Are you actually making the pumps or are you just buying and selling?

BS Pumps is available as .co.uk and most other domains. BS can be Box Shifting or anything else that seems appropriate.

The company / domain name is not going to have a significant impact, otherwise no one would have wanted to live in a building called Trump Tower or buy a Smeg kitchen appliance.

I will be buying and reselling but a lot is solution selling, the customer comes with an application and I have to select the correct pump based on this. The pumps can range from 200 to 50000 pounds per unit.

OK, at that level the domain / company name is even less important, people are buying your expertise, not your name. Something based on your name is good, it shows that you believe in it.

How are you planning on selling / marketing ? You've already mentioned that marketing is a weak point.

Once you have a plan in place the right kind of name becomes clearer.

Fisicx has a good point. You may only sell pumps for now, but you may find that a name with the word pumps in it will constrain you in the future should you want to diversify a little.

Using 'fluid' or 'flow' might be a better bet.

Doing a quick a search I see that 'flowmechanical.co.uk' is available. That's just an example - there are quite a few similar names still unregistered.
