Hi

Cold calling can be a successful method for any business.

  • If you work in the cold-calling industry what tips do you have?
  • What do you find to be a successful call opening sentence?
  • If the customers says no as you are talking, do you close the call or attempt to keep them on the line?

Thank you

Been a door to door cold caller and a for a short time a telephone cold caller. Never again it should have died a long time ago. It was fine years ago before the internet as people were not aware of certain new products or of how to get them/compare them. Now of course we can.

I look at it like this, if a product is good enough and is marketed right then I will know about it and know how to buy it of my own accord. If a product/service needs to be aggressively sold to me by either knocking on my door or phoning me up then that product/service can't be up to much can it?

So to answer your question, I don't believe there is a good way of cold calling as in general people hate being sold to. Especially ex salesman who know all the lines and ********:D.

I had a guy last week knock on my door and straight away tell me he wasn't selling anything followed by Mr so and so from number 45 and Mrs whoever from 32 has just signed up ! I said I thought you wern't selling anything? and by the way I used to use that line! he just smirked and went on his way bless him:rolleyes:

thank you for your comment,

If your leads are 'warm' as someone along the line has shown an interest in a service does this make things slightly easier?

Yes it does, but it depends on how warm the leads are. I would get passed on to me many 'warm' leads that I would call or visit, only to find out that the customer either has no idea or had asked not to be contacted. But the telesales rep would put them through to me to get thier figures up! That's part of the problem though, salespeople are targeted to high heaven and the poor customers suffer for it.

Cold calling is fine as long as you have pre qualified the contact and have something worth saying to the customer. It can be effective but if you pick up a directory and go from a-z at any and every business it will 100% fail.
It's not about the opening sentence and scripting your conversation, its about creating a hook, a reason to listen to you and most importantly what's in it for the person at the other end of the line.
Another tip I can give you is make sure you speak to the current person, the person that can decide if they but your product or service. Don't pitch the janitor lol
Put the meat on the bone first and you can worry about adding the dressing later.

im planning to make calls from home, not hard sales at all but to ask a question if the person im calling has had a review of their pension and provide free consultation. Im looking for keywords that will allow the person im calling to be interested in booking an appointment. It is based for people in my local area so i can visit them. I have customer service but not cold calling but want to make sure i can attract the attention of the custmer with the data i have received and make the majority of calls a success. Not being pushy or irritating to the customer..

Cold calling is only any good if what you sell is relevant. Pensions are a way to lose more money than anyone can afford so are not relevant to anyone. Pensions are like saving all your life to buy a Rolls-Royce and ending up with enough money to buy a mini.
