we bought a generic .co domain some time ago and have a holding page...now wondering if this was a complete waste of money as it does not show up in any searches on google etc.
can anyone shed light on this?

Are you driving traffic to it using SEO/PPC ?

We have several clients using the .co for hosting and some redirecting to a .com etc using .co as an abbreviated domain - i.e. ThisLongCompanyNameLtd.com as TLCNL.co

how many links do you have to the site? what seo are you doing for the .co domain? at a guess you're doing none.

google wont exclude .co domains unless they break their rules.

Erm... "a holding page" ????

By this you mean a static (doesn't change) single page saying "there's a site here soon" or something.... why would Google list that? I really must be misunderstanding your question.

it probably doesn't have any backlinks. If I register a domain whether it be .com etc, it won't show up until google crawls a site that links to it. You can always submit it to google manually.

Why do you think it should ?
If there's no content that google's users would want, then it's not going to be "found" by anyone.

Unless something is linking to it to "send" the spider to visit, how are they going to know it's even there to ignore it ?

Hello, it is good that you have this domain, but have you done something like SEO techniques, ti make it more popular. did you get links from somewhere. Are you sure that Google even knows about it ? There is no reason that Google blocks .co websites. So check if Google knows about this by typing:
site:mysite.co with http in front of it.

If you get your site as a result, then Google has indexed the page, if not, you should put some effort to let Google know about it.

Sounds like you did what I did a few years back and registered some domain names thinking that people would arrive there just by virtue of the domain name itself.

Doesn't work that way I'm afraid. Quick bucks require hard graft and link building to the domains you want people to land on!
