Hi,

Our website is ranking 6th on google for the search term we want which seems ok. The term gets 40,000 searches per month according to google adwords, yet we are only getting one or two per week.

Any idea what could be causing this? Or is this to be expected?

Search term is "professional indemnity"

Do you have your site on GWT? ( Google webmaster tools? )

That will show you accurately where your site is "really" ranking and how many impressions its getting.

Dont forget that #6 for you could be #1 for someone else or #1000

Professional Indemnity is a VERY broad keyword. People searching for it could be looking for anything from the latest news on professional indemnity insurance to information on whether they need it or not and of course, those looking to actually purchase it - but this could be a fraction of the people searching for the term.

In general to get the best guess of your 'natural' position you should be logged IN to Google and have 'web history' disabled.

As someone else mentioned however just where you see yourself is not necessarily where everyone else will see you. This is just your 'best guess' for someone new to the search query.

As for GWT, I don't trust those either really. I just stick to the above and check on other peoples PC or get friends to check for me etc if I want to double/triple check the result.

But for exacts which is what should really be used for Organic search (non-ppc) is only 2,400 so a lot less than the 40,000.

It's broad match, so that estimate is based on searches that include "professional" or "indemnity", or both or even variations of these words.

So you really are getting a highly inflated volume.

Note as well that your snippet is all me me me not WIIFM. Do a bit of on-site SEO and you may well get a few more clicks.

And the more likely search of 'professional indemnity insurance' knocks you off the page. So perhaps you are ranking for the wrong keywords.

The local exacts, which are what he needs to be ranking for are

2400 for professional indemnity

And

18000 for professional indemnity insurance

We usually rank 1-3 for commercial property insurance, and that has 1600 local exacts, which only gives around 150 visitors per month for that search term.

If you are taking an insurance quote and buy solution online you need to have a definitive plan on how to get traffic there, and deep pockets, as the ppc is astronomical.
