Christmas!

OK OK i know its only september, but i wanted to get a feel for what people are doing for the run up to christmas.
For many, (me included), its the busiest time of the year by far.

Christmas seems like its a long way off, but it looms in quite quickly once september is out the way.

Im wondering if anyone has to change the way they work to compensate for the busy spell, do you take on anymore staff, work longer hours.
Or indeed for some its the quietest time of the year and its hardley worth coming in to work!

I usually have to increase my working day by about 6 hours when we hit october! Then by mid December its all over until February.

I'd be interested to hear what its like for people in the run up

Yes, it's August, but you have to get ready now to prevent panic in October.

Our season includes Halloween so we are manic from about the middle of September right through to January - it's a killer.

A lot of our Christmas stock has arrived - people like to buy Halloween and Christmas decs together to save postage. There will be longer hours, more staff and weekend working at peak times.

If you plan now it is managable. Leave it later as suggested and it'll be difficult to do it smoothly.

We are incredibly busy already with the run up to The Clothes Show Live at Birmingham NEC this December.

It's amazing how much preparation is required for a 6 day event. Jewellery, even costume jewellery and dress jewellery is always popular at Christmas, so it's a busy time all round this year. It will be only our second Christmas online, so fingers crossed that it's a good one!

Fuzzy agrees with SillyJokes, plan ahead and then things are more manageable. We are very busy at Christmas time and even though some of our customers do plan ahead, many leave it till the last minute and then it's one mad panic, more so when we rely on Royal Mail

The xmas week is very busy for us.

We do 90% of our annual turnover in September through November, and it's all for end-of-year office Christmas parties in London. Missing the custom of a few banks this year though :-(

Hi

As I'm just starting out I have no idea what I'll be like come Christmas. Hard to tell if people will need me more, especially getting things like paperwork etc ready for self assessments in January, or whether people will have their heads buried so far in their work, they may not need me until Januray!

Looking forward to seeing how it pans out though!

Does anyone ever do anything on here for Christmas? i.e meet up? Chance for some 'merry networking' haha

Just a quick point for those complaining that Christmas products appear on shelves too early - I was in FMCG for over 10 years and was told that the main reason was that after 24th October, those who get paid monthly have only 2 pay days left until Christmas.

The vast majority don't save that much for Christmas (they either spend what they get paid in their last 2 pay packets of the year or get into debt and pay back (in theory!) in the New Year.

It still annoys me when I see Christmas products on sale before Bonfire Night though!
