Hey everyone, hope you are well. Its a lovely bright and sunny morning here in Manchester.

I am wanting to start a charity that will help sufferers of progressive neurological diseases, in terms of providing funding to advance research. Sadly i have seen alot of close friends go through diseases such as this.

I have alot of ideas such as hosting small events, getting sponsorship for a skydive etc. However i wondered if a social enterprise would be tax efficient for donations and would people still be willing to to donate or would i need to become a charity as i know people who donate can claim tax relief?

For ordinary rate taxpayers it is the charity that benefits via Gift Aid. Higher rate taxpayers can claim relief on the excess.

Have you thought about being a fundraiser for an existing charity that helps people with progressive neurological diseases?

Is there any reason to start up a competing charity?
Often there are dozens of competing charities all chasing the same money pots for doing the same work - without the benefit of scale or expertise.
Sometimes there is no one doing a particular thing - then its worth talking to the existing charities in that type of problem to see if they can add that thing before starting up a new charity.

If you really want to help find like minded people and invest together in a fund for either startup biotech companies or the ones doing work in that field. Most efficient way to actually get something done instead of going through the hoops of running a charity that creates overheads and other things.

I have been the chairman of a few charities but setting one up is extremely difficult these days. You could start without charitable status and get some members and fund raising behind you. do contact the Charities Commission for advice.
