Change my URL or not - that is the question.

Please may I ask you guys an opinion.

I have been using a company name as the URL as it was registered before the advantage of using a trade specific URL was appreciated. This has been going for 15 years now. I have seen that companies who have used electric fencing based URL's do better in the SERPS although I do OK, currently 5th on the first page for "Electric Fencing" with the help of Tim's course.

I've recently purchased a trade specific URL "electric.fencing.uk" when it came available (just in case someone else got it) - so should I move my shop to that or would it be a mistake to do so and continue as I am?

I hope you will help.

All the best

EMDs - Exact Match Domains - was the recommended course of action as Google was giving preference to EMDs. But that evaporated some while ago and EMD is no longer the major advantage that it used to be.

I do not believe the sub-domain you've purchased is of any use. My advice would be to dump it and focus on moving your main site up the index. And to find a good SEO. ;)

    Hey Codbuster.

I would keep your shop on your existing domain.

How's your site doing converting the existing traffic you get from Google?

Your competitors do better because they are better at SEO than you. It's got nothing to do with the domain name.

Do not change the domain, it can affect your overall ranking because if you will change the domain then you have to use the 301 redirections to move all URL to the new one but it takes some time to move permanently and it can affect your ranking.I suggest you do not change your domain

Your domain name won't help in your SEO performance, it has very little impact on the performance. However, if you decide to change the domain, make sure you have redirected all old URLs to the new URLs using 301 Permanent Redirects.

    All the best.

After all this time it would be a bit crazy to change it unless you had some severe spam issues going on.

I think you have a good site there, it's got a lot of content and nicely optimised.

Your home page is quite text heavy so you may want to consider adding some more clickable elements for users, such as "Top products", "Latest products", etc.

User experience is becoming an important ranking factor so look to increase time on page and use the home page as the route into key areas of the site.

Text is good for search engines but users scan so they needs plenty of options to click on.
