Hi.
my company is looking to move to import from China via shipping containers and confused with the mass of information.

Does anyone know a good source that could share a case study of importing from China with all the relevant steps ?

Also anyone know how to rate these distribution /fulfilment centres for the best ?

Willing to pay for the above if necessary.
Thanks

Hi.

I work for a freight forwarder, and would suggest calling and speaking to a couple and asking them the process and their advice.

Overall, it's quiet a simple process, but understand it can seem daunting if you've not handled it before.

First point is to speak to your shipper and find out what terms they are selling the cargo. The main options would be EXW (You pay all charges from their door through to the delivery point), FOB (The shipper pays the charges to get the cargo in China and loaded on board the ship, you pay everything else), CFR (The shipper pays everything through to arrival in the UK, you pay UK charges including delivery), and CPT or DDU (The shipper pays everything apart from a customs clearance fee). In all these situations you would pay any duty/vat applicable.

It is then a case of getting 2 or 3 quotes for the transport, based on the container size, load point (IF EXW), Point of loading and delivery point, which a forwarder in the UK should easily be able to do, comparing the options, and going with the forwarder you feel suits your needs, be that the cheapest, or the one who gives you confidence they can handle your cargo.

I would suggest that, for your first shipment, being able to trust the forwarder and have confidence is more important than a small saving.
