I am looking for a new card payment provider.
I have a bricks-and-mortar retail shop with a WooCommerce online store. I take around £20k per month on card, mostly face to face but about 10% online or by telephone.
I have been using Dojo for card payments for the last few years and I've been very happy with them. The customer service has been good. The service has been very reliable. The A920 card reader device is very good. The website integration was easy, However, my monthly bill has shot up from around £200pm to over £300pm so it may be time to move on or at least find some quotes to negotiate them down.

I wonder if anyone has recommendations for a cost effective provider that offers:
  • A countertop device (preferably a modern Android device rather than an Ingenico brick)
  • Telephone payments
  • Online payments with a WooCommerce integration
  • Next day settlement
  • Short contract length - eg 6 months and then a rolling monthly basis

Many thanks for your help.

To be honest, I think £300 a month is good for £20,000 takings, works out at an average of 1.5% all in.

Our current provider is very cheap at the moment (prices going up soon) at 0.69% plus interchange at 0.20% - 0.30% for consumer cards up to 1.65% for business cards.

If all of our customers were consumer cards, we would be paying about £195 plus £28 per terminal (ours is a 3G terminal) for a £20k monthly turnover.

If we had a mix of consumer/business cards we would be paying about £329 plus £28 per terminal.

We then have to pay additionally for our ecom/moto gateway.

Is £200 total costs - transactions, gateways, terminals etc?

What is your base transaction fees and what additional costs do you have?

I have not been around this game for a while but would think that, through a proper merchant, your base transaction fees should be under 0.5%

£300pm covers everything - terminal rental and transaction fees. The base transaction fee for personal debit cards has recently doubled from 0.41% + 1p to 0.83% + 1p and the 'secure transaction fee' has gone from 4p to 5p per-transaction. I make around 1600 card transactions per month with an average sale of around £12.

I would have thought that your previous rate was achievable and you might be able to remove that transaction fee if you went to other suppliers.

Unlikely you will get a 6 month contract anywhere.

Are you a member of a business group/organisation?

I have a quote from another provider that is substantially less than £200pm (possibly because the sales rep was new and I ran rings around him). The features they offer don't quite match Dojo but I can take their quote and try to negotiate a better deal from Dojo. I'm wondering how best to do that: just call them up and ask for a better price, or give notice to quit my contract and let them call me.

I would sweat - for a phone call or two you could save £1-2k a year, which is worth it in my books!

If you are a member of a group like YBC or FSB, they have preferential rates via big providers - well worth the membership fee.
