Can anyone help me with AWS bot control?

    Hi Folks,

We're seeing a big increase in bot traffic from Singapore, China, Sweeden, USA and even random places around Europe.

I've looked at setting is AWS and it seems very complex (to me!)

Can anyone help me set this up over a screen share?

    Thanks in advance

I was going to suggest Cloudflare too for edge protection as Ozzy mentioned as I thought the bot traffic was coming from AWS infrastructure.

To HFE Signs, if you're using AWS, you're either using the load balancer for ingress, and traffic is routed to other systems or AWS services with public IP addresses, where you may need a more generic platform solution. If you are indeed using AWS, feel free to write back here, and I can explain where you could look and what options are available. I can advise on Cloudflare too if you're using other providers.

@HFE Signs - why are you using AWS?

This is just a question not a criticism. I’ve looked at using cloud hosting but haven’t yet found a compelling reason.

Our web guys suggested it a while ago when we were on a local server, they said if you go with one of the larger companies then security and up time will be better. It's above my understanding so I took their advice.

Web guys... so they're not really software guys. Are you running a software application in AWS or just a non-interactive website? Would it help to get an assessment of what's running? I'm not sure if I'm allowed to offer this here, but I don't mind helping with a quick assessment of your software stack in AWS (it should only take a few mins - not planning to charge for it, but perhaps I can guide you).

Put it back on a local server.
Years ago we were on a local server with quite a small company, the problem was that when it went down (which was only once) it took about 2hrs to get to speak with someone and another half a day before it was back up. Maybe this was something that never happens and it was pure bad luck, however it did put me off.

Local could mean a datacentre anywhere in the UK.

So go with a larger hosting company and you shouldn’t have a problem. Mine has 24/7 support. I also have cPanel access which means I can do a lot of fixing.

@HFE Signs would you like assistance in assessing your current AWS deployment and exploring options for provisioning in a different datacentre? There's no one-size-fits-all approach. Whatever I do, its tied to business objectives, rather than slotting any old solution in place.

Thanks for your kind offer, we are in the process of developing a new site so maybe its something to look at then, as for now I don't like to change things while they're working.

Thanks for coming back. Indeed, I agree, if you already have a team working on this, best to allow them to continue. If you do need to cross-check anything, by all means, don't hesitate to ask.
