Buying a new site - SEO?

We have been offered to purchase an ecommerce-site ( .com ) hosted in France.
Not really interested in the site itself, but it has good Google placement with some main keywords and decent traffic from organic.
We are thinking to make an offer for the domain and have the traffic redirected to our French website ( .fr ) which is hosted in Italy.
My major concern is that Google will pick-up the change and eventually penalise the ranking, thus defeating the purpose.
Can anybody offer advise?

Thanks

As soon as you set up the redirect Google will forget the old site and all those rankings will disappear unless you replicate the contents on your french site (which rather defeats the object).

Do as earl says and run both sites.

And host in the country you are tagetting. This includes the French site.
