Hello,

Does the directory businessmagnet.co.uk have a strong SEO benefit? I don't think many companies use directories to actually look for suppliers but they are saying there is an SEO benefit to have a premium listing.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

The short answer is 'no'. Never mind about 'strong' - it has no SEO benefit.

The longer answer is also 'no'. Presumably they are talking about linking from their site to yours. Google long ago stopped valuing directory links. In any case, the free listings have the links 'no-followed' which means that even if they had any value, it wouldn't count.

Maybe they mean that with a premium listing they remove the 'No Follow' tag on the link to your site. If the links had any value they would then count. But they don't, so they won't.

Like the man said, they are telling porkies. There is no SEO benefit. One could even consider the premium links to be paid for links which is against Google’s guidelines.

I had a look at my Google Analytics and over a year, I only had two referrals. When I questioned this, they said that they run their site through Cloudflare. This is what they said -

Since Cloudflare does not proxy Google traffic, Cloudflare has no effect on Google Analytics (GA) tracking. Your site visitors will interact with Google's servers directly. The Google Analytics JavaScript code on your pages is executed by the user's browser, so Google Analytics sees the IP of the user's browser. The GA JavaScript code on your page doesn't talk to your site, so it doesn't interact with Cloudflare.

This may or may not be true but the numbers they showed me were WAY different than what I saw in my GA account.

Does ANYBODY use a directory anymore to look for new suppliers? I wouldn't think so......I would think that people/companies would just pull up Google like everybody else. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the input and insight!

Here's the test for them (or any other directory):

  • Go to Google.
  • Search for something related to your industry/what you sell (for example ‘red widgets’).
  • Scan through the search results.
  • Do you see the directory pages appearing prominently within those search results?
