these sites dont tell you WHERE ABOUTS exactly the business is,

why would i waste money on info for a business thats not in my preferred area!

The info is limited, hence, if someone could check it out out save a few bob

so please, do carry on with your witty remarks

dont bother me the slightest

I guess the idea is that they give a general overview of the service they provide. Anyone who is genuinely serious about buying a business will then pay the fee to access the information.

Although I can't speak for businessesforsale, we have run www.Business-sale.com for about 15 years, and one of the reasons we don't give postcodes out is that that many of the businesses for sale are medium to large in size, and it is too easy to identify them from their postcode. Some of the owners selling businesses don't want their staff to find out the business is on the market. Others want to remain anonymous to everyone apart from vetted prospective purchasers who have signed an NDA.

In our case, we don't charge people who are selling any listing fee.

That way we get a more comprehensive database of UK businesses for sale. Upon payment of a small fee, the buyer gets the contact details of that business and any other business we have on the database, including every company going into administration.

Considering his/her potential outlay for a business purchase, it's not usually a big issue to pay a small fee to get access to such a large information source.

From the other side of the coin... we at Sunbelt Business Brokers list businesses for sale - on behalf of our clients - on Jim's site (and in the physical magazine) and get serious enquiries from high quality potential purchasers. I guess the dreamers and time-wasters get filtered out by the need to put their money where their mouth is :)

Exactly, having to pay a fee filters out the vast majority of dreamers and time-wasters.

Business owners selling up using this portal are paying £100 a time to ensure the portal only send them qualified enquirers.

you charge a FEE because you run a business, you will get time wasters yes your right, but you also make a double whammy!!

charge the client (vendor) a fee upon completion and buyer a fee to get the info! get my point?

My simply query was i want to know the AREA- Yorkshire is a large place, why should i pay £15 for info on a business in sheffield, when i want it in harrogate, get my point?

funny how people are quick to rabbit on and on, and side track off the original question.....

i rest my case

Thanks

ps- i paid £15 plus VAT for the info, and it wasnt even located where the advert marginally suggested, so, it was a waste!

Multiple income streams!

why not contact the owners then and say "you said this business was in lcation X, i signed up specifically to get information on that business in that location - and after paying, i discovered it wasn't there - I think i am entitled to a refund"

they may well agree, refund you your money and update their site with the correct info so as to attract people who would be interested in the business

though, personally, i think you are at it, a dreamer and expect a business to land in your lap for free - you'll probably never get one off the ground and if you do, it'll fail - and guess what, you'll think it's all someone elses fault

good luck!

That's a bit harsh, after all he's just blown half of his business acquisition pot on that £15 fee :p

i take it you own one of these sites....

do you see the likes of rightmove or estate agents doing the same? NO

i rest my case

Not entirely true. If you look at a house on rightmove and want to contact the estate agent in question you are provided with a telephone number. This is a telephone number that redirects to the agent via a line operated by rightmove who charge you 4p/min for the service. Of course the savvy user can simply google the estate agent and call them directly.

The point I am making is that any company that offers a mediatory or middle-man service typically charges both parties for the pleasure, nothing unusual or suspect about that. If you wish to use the services that a business has to offer then expect that you may have to pay for it.

For what its worth, I have used these sites before and happy to pay the fee as it is pretty minimal. If nothing else I have found the individuals more responsive when approaching them...but that's just me and my view.

I understand the point about finding out that the business is not in your choosen location, having though it was, not sure what you can do there really....complain ?

I have registered with this website some time ago because I am always looking to purchase businesses in the same sector as myself. You use to be able to contact sellers free but for some reason they now charge £89 per year which I refuse to pay.

I just wait until the advert is 14 days old I refuse to pay to contact a seller when the seller has paid to have the advert there in the first place. Besides this their website has been turned into another ebay businesses for sale section and is full of crap generic businesses, so called get rich quick schemes and silly money making opportunities.

Hi I have just joined this thread - I am the head of marketing for businessesforsale.com, so wanted to see whether I can help anyone with their questions regarding the site.

To those asking about the fees we charge, whilst we do have a pay wall for 'power users' the vast majority of listings can be viewed free of charge, the pay wall is there to give power buyers the opportunity to get in early.

As far as having business opportunities go - whilst we do have some things other than businesses for sale, these are relatively few - and if someone wants to post thes we do have other sites - franchisesales.co.uk, and businessopportunities.com

I'd be more than happy to answer any other questions people have.

Jeremy
