Hello

I am a Graduate who Graduated with Business Computing Degree, i want to start my own business but don't know which route to go down.
I can make basic websites and photoshop work, but don't understand code that well and wouldn't feel confident starting a business around it.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Thanks for replying, dont get me wrong i know some of the routes i covered such as design SEO and planning from a bricks and mortar store to on line store, but don't feel like I could start a business in it as I don't have any experience on how it "officially" works.

I might start off just on-line first doing thinks such as ebay templates, or blog templates.

I know the basics i can make websites, set up E-commerce Sites and i know how to use After Effects and 3D animation programs but not at a pro level to start a business in.
And then the other side of it the main side like selling and pitching and getting clients I have so experience of this at all.

I graduate this year with computer science with business management as my degree. I would say that if you are currently unsure about how to apply your skills then employment may be the best thing to do first.

Once you move to web development over web design you must be careful about things like security issues, locks, usability, feasibility. If you don't know how to code, then it is likely that you could implement a fundamental security flaw.

If you are still determined then I would recommend doing some reading around how to use a web language such as php, python, ruby, java, asp, asp.net in conjunction with mysql or postgresql.

This is the problem i have tried to really learn coding like HTML css and PHP but just get lost in all of it, i find it really hard to remember i am dyslexic so wonder if thats why?

No disrespect Killah but I would have to agree with everyone else here that your first step should be to find a company that is prepared to take you on so you can get commercial and practical experience. I cant see you competing with other businesses when you clearly dont understand your own skillset.

I appreciate its tough out there for you, but don't lose sight, it’s important to keep focused and keep on chipping away. I doubt a new business is right you at this moment in time, mainly due to your lack of experience but if there really is nothing then give it a go, if anything you will learn from the experience.
What will help alot, if you try and identify what your strengths are and what you are good at and act upon them. maybe by adding more strings to your bow by way of extra p/t training courses.
Work really hard now and i promise you Will reap the benefits when the upturn comes.
Good luck!

Hi OP

As the other chaps here have said, I would recommend that you go and "cut your teeth" working for a company to learn the application of the skills that you have learned at college.

Starting your own business is easy however gaining client confidence is not, and being able to demonstrate high end work that you have been involved in is paramount.

You'll gain more than experience in using the products you can work with because you will also gain valuable insight into the workings of a company and you'll most likely learn an awful lot of "what not to do."

This will mean that when you begin your own business there is every chance that you won't fall into some of the traps that so many people manage to fall into.

Just my pennyworth.

Regards

Jon

If you don't have a particular skill set, you can either spend a lot of time learning it, or you can employ/contract someone else who does have it, and who will work under the banner of your company.

Not wishing to poo poo the hard work of those graduating in computing related degrees, I've noticed in the 15 years since I've graduated, that the quality of computing courses offered by non red-brick universities is just not up to scratch.:)

I would like to recommend The University of Birmingham School of Computer Science. I graduate this July after having studied 'Computer Science with Business Management'. I have had a very good experience.
