Building a site with wordpress

If you are a novice, how easy or hard would it be to build a simple 8 page website with wordpress?

As easy or as hard as you want to make it mate. Grab a host that offers a one-click installer, grab a host that offers template service, pop a bit of content in the pages, done.

Depends on your sites functionality. Pretty simple, download a free theme (www.wordpress.org/extend/themes/) and reading the documentation (http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page).

You will need hosting, a domain name and some spare time to get everything set up. A lot of hosting companies offer 1 click wordpress install so you don't have to do the nitty gritty.

Wordpress is going to be browser-based. So Operating System is irrelevant.

It makes no difference, it's a web based platform so all you need is a web browser and an internet connection

There are a lot of great Wordpress guys on here (see above) and if you are not sure they would be well worth talking to.

I have two sites on running Wordpress (www.excel-expert.com and www.iLoveSpreadsheets.biz) with a 3rd non Excel site on the way and they were all dead easy to set up. I did cheat a bit and downloaded some professional templates for them which gave me a great head start.

I did notice a begineers type guide on sale for about £10 in amongst the computer magazines in WHSmith - Might be worth an investment.

As stated before it can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make it, but that also means your sites can get more and more sophisticated as your skills grow

You don't need wordpress for 8 pages - totally pointless. If you mean you are starting with 8 pages and want to build a bigger dynamic site then fair enough - it's hard to beat.

Wordpress is so easy to set up and install why not do it for 8 pages, or less?

Wordpress is mega easy to setup. So easy in fact if you still need help I will set it up for you

I say it every time, but definitely go with WordPress - even for small sites.

As others recommend. Opt for a UK web hosting company with cPanel/Linux and a "one-click" WordPress install and you're good to go.

We also offer a version of hosted WordPress similar to wordpress.com - where you don't even need to install WordPress. Meaning you can have your website setup in minutes, and in Google just a few days later.

It would depend on the theme, many people simply get a word press theme, and get articles from Wikipedia and amend them to suit

What do you want to do with the theme? Can you post a link to the theme (on wordpress directory).

To edit it you will need css and xhtml knowledge, and maybe some php.

I will put my neck out here, but I don't really like advising people to amend a theme to their needs (unless built in like thesis / apathula), as you end up with a bodged job and if something goes wrong you may not know where the issue is. Find a theme that is exactly what you want or get one built, it will save you a lot of hassle in my opinion.

I don't think there is any harm in playing around. Make a copy of the theme and upload 2 copies so you have an original copy and one that you will be editing, then if you bugger it up you can revert back to the original one

Another vote for "it's as easy as you want it to be" you can get a basic site up and working without a great deal of technical knowledge. I would say however that a designer/developer can really boost the productivity of a wordpress install and the effectiveness of the layout in reaching it's goal.
