Hi can any one suggest a good company to build and host a website on a budget, where i will be able to update it and add new products myself. It will need to be an online shop. Thanks

I am not sure if anyone can ever build an ecommerce website on a budget, because there are quite a few security issues to take care of, and now with the EU GDPR laws there is added complexity to running any website within the EU.

How many products do you intend to sell initially, because it could turn out that you'd be better off starting with a basic package from one of the bigger ecommerce platform providers than paying someone to build you a bespoke ecommerce website?

When you talk of budget, exactly how much are you looking at?

I would use shopify.com, it's a monthly cost, but comes with plenty of tools and designs for you to get started. They host the site for you. You can point a domain name to it if you wish and they will give you a secure server certificate for free, so your store has the little padlock icon and is secure. They have their own payment gateway, plus you can add your PayPal or other payment options. Huge websites use Shopify so it scales really well should you get bigger.

You should look to budget at least 600 pounds to get a starter shop with woocomerce which runs on wordpress or j2store joomla as examples I personally run myself and have created.

Danger of shopify and sites where you pay a monthly fee is vendor lock in and a lack of control. But you can get running quickly- still those options I gave earlier are quite rapid to get going if you know what you are doing.

Why?

If you can read you can learn how to do it yourself for nothing. No need to spend £600.

If you are a web developer and can administrate a server then indeed you can do it yourself.
If you want to take 2 months and time off actually building your business to save 600 pounds then go ahead! I value my time much more than that.

Also there are no FREE e-commerce solutions in real terms!

You don't need to be either of these things. I helped a couple with their woocommerce site yesterday. They got some hosting, installed wordpress and woo and added products. They got payments set up and is all worked. I took them the weekend to do. They just needed a bit of help setting up variants. It was just about as free as it gets.

I would recommend a Web host and use WordPress with Woo Commerce installed. This puts you in complete control of your store, most hosts offer free domains and most certainly free SSL certificates nower days.
