BT Versatility and 3rd Party VOIP

We have one client that uses our SIP trunks with a BT Versatility, so it does work with a few conditions.

You will need the broadband plus module on the Versatility, with a later version of the firmware to allow you to configure it.

I remember it was a little bit of fun getting it configured to start with, but it now works well. If it's of any help, if you are able to get the the config on one of your PCs I'd be happy to get one of the guys to connect in and set it up to ours to test it works?

BT don't support it, so they won't help if there is an issue, but I'm guessing your our of support anyway?

It's possible that you'll get at least some of it working - whether it's worth doing is a separate question. I suspect you'll spend a lot of time getting pretty frustrated with it.

For what it's worth, I think you're better advised using a hosted service - particularly if you've only got a few extensions. The risks of setting up and maintaining a PBX that hangs off the internet are great - an unprotected or badly maintained box will be found and attacked within hours. With the wrong SIP trunk provider you could find a very large bill drop through your door.

"A SIP trunk is effectively an open credit card - I think most people are not aware of what they are buying or what the associated risk is."
