Hi
Had a new client come to me and say that the website that they had paid £600 for ( site built by another company) was not working. we had a look and discovered that the site didn't work in ie 6 or 7.
Please make sure if you are having a site made for you or your busienss, that it works in all browsers.
Just thought I would mention it to save people problems.
Hope it helps!
Mike

Total garbage. Many web developers will state in their terms and conditions that they do not support IE6; how do you know that this wasn't such a company?

You'll never know, maybe they are just working under a team of unprofessional. They should at least know the environment of every browser, and that Cross browser testing is the most important factor for web designers. How come they did not consider such circumstances like this.

Testing on ALL browsers currently in use is standard practise, currently I'm working for one of the worlds largest mobile phone network providers and they are still using IE6 internally for their 50k PC's across EMEA.

Never seen this IE6 exclusion in T&C's before. :|

Surely if ie6 has been dropped by MS due to the security holes then why are people still using it ? Especially a mobile phone giant who should be at the leading edge of technology ?
Corporations are often reluctant to upgrade unless absolutely necessary. If the Intranet and all other apps work just fine in IE6 then they will keep using it. In the same way that most are still using XP.

I do understand your point and having managed the infrastructure for some very big brand names I appreciate the reasoning. But its been my experience that when a major flaw has been identified in a piece of software that is part of the "standard" desktop that the corporate has been very keen to eliminate any potential risks.
But I suppose as they are planning a windows 7 upgrade that in this case it wouldnt have made sense to create further work.

Then you haven't lived. ;) It took me about 10 seconds to find one.

I'm not saying that I agree with it; I am merely saying that to write off a company as a bunch of charlatans because they don't support IE6 is totally wrong.
Most designers worth their salt will allow IE6 to degrade gracefully; others believe that providing ongoing support for IE6 verges on heresy.

Despite endless security upgrades, IE6 still presents serious security issues which are easily exploited. (I have no intention of going into these on an open forum, suffice to say that you would need to be a blithering idiot to use IE6 on a e-commerce site).

I think it is also fair to say that regardless of what site you showed me, I would probably be able to come up with some browser from the dark ages in which it would look like shite.
What do we do; support them all? Oh happy days, especially if you can find a client willing to pay.

We still do support IE6 for our sins and while everything is not quite pixel perfect, we reckon it's about as good as you are going to get; but deep down inside I know it's wrong on so many levels.
