Hello

Is their any such thing as a person who builds blogs for people on Wordpress? I started to do this with wordpress and it is turning out to be quite painful.

Unfortunately, my talent is elsewhere, and I really am not a techy person.

thank you:redface:

Lo

I will be blogging myself Old welsh guy.

I did all the right things with my host company downloaded wordpress, found a few templates and now I have been stuck for a week trying to work out how to put things together.

So yes an installation job but do not know what skins are.

I am trying to do the following:

  • turn home page into static page so it does not show blog messages just an "about" type paragraph.
  • put all the social media buttons on there
  • some SEO stuff (I know thats not the correct term.)
thats all I really need for the next 6-8 months until I get some readers, and then I will take it to the next level.

Do you know, I thought Wordpress was meant to be easy, but it does drive one to tears:mad:

To have a static page for the homepage, create the page, then in admin go to settings > reading and select the page from the dropdown.

To add the social media media buttons just install a relevant plugin, such as sociable

All in One SEO plugin will do all the SEO stuff you need.

If you have any problems with that just post up again.

Thanks SFD - I did that just now, but there is no dropdown menu there is just this:

Reading Settings

Blog pages show at most postsBlogs shown at most 10 posts

Syndication shows the
most recent 10 posts

Encoding for pages and feeds UTF-8
Blog pages show at most postsSyndication feeds show the most recent postsFor each article in a feed, show For each article in a feed, show Full text
Summary
Encoding for pages and feeds The character encoding of your blog (UTF-8 is recommended, if you are adventurous there are some other encodings)

Could it have anything to with the template I have chosen?

Also I cannot get any text whatsoever to show on my blog, even though with a previous template tabs and words were showing, but now I have changed it everything has gone.

If you are still struggling give me a PM and I'll give you my number and I'll talk you through it.

I'd say I'd do it for you but then you'd never learn ;)

In case you forget and for anyone else finding the post.

SEO for wordpress was done using HeadSpace2 (plugin).

In the settings tab on the left select headspace, then any page titles/description/tags you enter as the default in here will be shown for that particular post/page/archive etc etc when there is no information entered on that post/page/archive etc etc

When creating the post/page etc under the main text editor there is a headspace section. Enter the page title/description here. If you leave it blank it will pick up any default set in the previous paragraph. Same goes for the tags.

To have a static page for your home page first create a page (using the page section on the left) that you want to use for the home page. While your at it create a second page for the blog page.

When done go to Settings and select reading. Now change the "Front Page Displays" from your latest posts to a static page. Select the page you have created for the home page as the front page and the page you created for the blog as the post page. Save changes.

You may want to remove the page created as a home page from the navigation as it will come under the home link. To do this install a plugin called Exclude Pages From Navigation.
