I am looking to build a blog, the aim of which will be to provide articles which will be relevant to my main website. Should I run the blog within my website (at say blog.mywebsite.com) or set up a separate site for my blog (mywebsiteblog.com).

Which would be better for SEO and what other considerations should I take into account. (I dont mind paying two sets of hosting fees).

Thanks

Running a blog within your main website is more preferable in terms of SEO.

Blog within the website is the good option to give your website fresh, quality and unique content in easy way. It also helps in to improve domain authority.

domain.co.uk/blog/ - it's better for seo as it's considered a part of the main site

blog.domain or domainblog.co.uk are separates sites to the main site so won't have much or any impact

This. Definitely this.

(Good) Content is inescapably the most important part of your SEO strategy (lots of good articles out there which explain why) - and a blog is one of the top ways to provide a stream of constantly fresh, meaningful and relevant content to your site - so why would you separate it out? :)

don't use blogger / wordpress.com

Get a copy of Wordpress (from wordpress.org) and install that on your server so it's a part of your site.

To answer your question, yes it's possible, you would need to add the /blog folder onto your website and then iframe in the other blog. It's a poor technique though.

You should be setting up your blog on your own website. for example www.yoursite.com/blog

The key reason being that once people visit the blog pages, it is going to be much harder to convert them into a lead or sale if you have to take them between two websites.

The second reason is that Google loves fresh websites... if you want your website to look fresh, and have a rich diverse set of inbound keywords, then the content needs to go on your site (not someone else's).

Generally speaking, and if possible you should setup Wordpress in /blog, and theme it to look like your main website. This way the customer never knows the difference between your blog and your website. If you have the budget you should consider making your website and blog part of the same Wordpress install.... meaning you login to one portal to manage your website AND blog, and everything can be controlled and managed centrally.

    Hope that help....

Do both, it is correct that an internal blog has a bigger impact SEO wise. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have other external blogs pointing to your site, use these free blogs put unique relevant content on there and this will create a good link.

Install your blog within your site like yourdomain.com/blog/post. It is the best way of running your site's blog. Creating a sub domain for your site's blog is not a good way and none of person use this solution. You just set up your site's blog like i explain in my post.

Yep, it's exactly the same thing and is a good way to do it (I do it on mine).

WordPress is great as it has the blogging feature by default and it's easy to split between a static page and a blog page.

It doesn't matter what you call it, you could call it anything as long as it's fresh content which is updated regularly.

I run some blogs for clients and they just run off pure HTML (where I have to hand code the posts and publish them on the site).

Why not just use wordpress on your domain as part of your main site - keep pages for product info / selling / advice etc.

And posts for interesting articles / how to's etc

That way your readers are never to far away from buying your product / service.

Internal blog would be better for a website , you can share and update it from one central domain entity .Domain Authority and other SEO Factors will boost it on the go. Second thing if you have posted your previous articles on free blogging platrforms like wp or blogger you can just redirect(301) to internal blog , it will surely help you to get success with blogging. :)

I suggest you to set up a separate site for your blog.
    Read the thread you numpty.

Do NOT set up a sperate site for your blog.

The blog should be a seamless part of the whole site. This means the user shouldn't be able to tell if they are reading a blog post or your product pages. Navigation should be integrated along with calls to action and other whole-site features.

In other words, it's not the website+shop+blog. It's just the website.

You 100% do NOT want your blog on a separate website.

Think about it like this; the idea of blogging is to generate traffic...visitors....potential customers. How are you going to take people from your blog, and encourage them to purchase your product/services.

It's a hard enough challenge if your blog is on your own website... if your blog is on another website you pretty much have no chance of converting visitors into customers.

    You might find this blog post (which is on our own site) of interest, as it covers this topic full-on;

    http://www.makeusawebsite.com/blog/why-you-blog-needs-to-be-on-your-own-website/

In short...anyone hosting their blog externally is likely wasting their time every time they write a blog post.

Ignore the preceding two posts, they are wrong in every possible way.

This debate is usually subdomain i.e. blog.domain.com vs folder i.e. domain.com/blog, certainly either of these options is better than installing the blog script (e.g. Wordpress.org self-install) on a separate domain that you own. But I think you meant using a web 2.0 property such Weebly or Wordpress.com. Either way the best option is folder on your existing domain. This way your visitor journey can funnel from your blog posts to your main product/service offering pages more easily.

Putting a blog on your site can be highly beneficial for a website as it is a part of the website that is regularly updated and Google sees this and appreciates extra content as well as a regularly updated website. However - it is important the content is of good quality and unique otherwise it may not be beneficial.

If you need tips on things you could blog about drop me a line :)

I've a question on this.... if you have posts on your WP site and you categorize your posts as news, as in site. com/news/blah-blah.

Is this the same as having site. com/blog/blah-blah?

The benefits are the same- it is a place where additional content is added for google to see and the content can help your customer too. Some businesses choose to have a 'news' section for actual news about the industry and a 'blog' section for more informal posts.

People have listed some of the benefits here, but the other benefit of making your blog part of your site name is that you don't have to manage multiple subdomains. Lots can go subtly wrong when you're trying to build a complicated website and it's good to take away something that could conceivably fail.

I think you may have found that there is a fairly polarised view on this - and I agree. Keep it on the same root domain. A blog is the best way to keep fresh content on your domain and will definitely help SEO, just make sure you make the most of each post on social media and don't just add articles for the sake of wordcount. I actually prefer to call a blog something else like 'latest news', just becausethe word blog is starting to become a bit 'samey' now!
