blog linking

Right,

I am in the process of improving my site, but in the mean-time I am link building and investigating link building techniques.

Now ideally I need to get links from DIY forums and construction industry forums. But how can I post links to my site without being banned for spamming?

As soon as you stick a link on one of these sites, they remove it and ban you.

Any tips?

As above, in your sig. But any benefit is going to fairly close to zero to be honest.

Hard to ascertain. I have found them to be quite fruitful if the truth be told.

But it all comes down to the best return on investment of time, because time is money.

Contextual links are the best, which is why if i was the op i'd probably write articles and get a link builder to distribute them onto relatively quality sites.

Because your business is DIY-related it's a little bit harder for you to obtain a link through forums because self-promotion for direct financial gain has always been frowned upon in discussion forums.

BUT, there are ways in which you can get backlinks from forums without being considered a spammer:

1. Add your website as your personal homepage on your forum profile
2. Use signatures to display links

These two are easy ways but the values are quite minimal in the bigger picture of things.

3. Do not simply spam your link but contribute actively & positively to the discussion. In such case, people wouldn't mind your link. Usually.

You don't need 10,000 sites. But you could use a combination of high pr blog posts and some web 2.0 properties.

How to backlink without spamming? Easy. Post 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20 articles on each property, and only link back to yourself on a rare occasion (1 or 2 posts max). Don't post links for the first 5 or more articles. Don't post links for the first few weeks. Contribute to the community by following, liking, commenting, discussing, etc.

Ok, so maybe you spend the next month or two writing and posting and building links. Maybe you do boost the odd keyword and see yourself ranking higher. But the whole effort may be pointless. Because you are going to change the site, focus in a different niche and possibly even look at a different range of products it may be that you are going to range for something that isn't relevant to your business plan.

Don't do any link building until you have finished on the site, carried out some customer research and decided what you need to rank for. Otherwise all your linkbuilding efforts may well be wasted.

For a number of my client, I mix up the link building

There are many ways to go about this.

Social bookmarking, directory submissions, article submissions, blog commenting etc

Make sure that the source isn't corrupt in any way and make sure it is as relevant as possible.

Wiki pages are good also. This has really improved a number of the websites I work on at present.
