Blog Commenting - Is it Worth it?

From an SEO point of view, is spending half a day per week building backlinks through blog commenting a worthwhile exercise? Most blogs set links as "nofollow" in comments. Do any SEO experts out there reading this have a better suggestion for what to do with my weekly half day of link building?

My opinion? Nope as the posts can be easily edited, removed or nofollowed and the likelyhood of getting anything from the links is minimal.

Personally I just use my sig links in forums and then get relevant links e.g. directory sites like freeindex.

Not really but it might help to build up a bit of trust. If you are commenting regularly on the right blogs then you may pick up a bit of traffic and a few may even convert.

On the other hand, 10 phone calls in the same half day could generate a lot more business.

As said most blogs are nofollow anyway, but there are lists of dofollow blogs floating around on the net.
And they either get spammed to death or are very heaviliy moderated so again not really worth the effort.

I have tested blog commenting and found it to work a lot better than expected.

If I was in your position though, I would contact businesses, asking if they would like a free t-shirt, with their logo/design, in return for a review/mention and link to your website.

Targeting schools/unis/students aswell as large local companies could result in some links from good sites.

You could also offer this to your followers on twitter.

This should get you a lot better result than blog comments.

Thanks for all your comments. You guys are right about contacting potential customers directly rather than link building will generate more business, however my goal is to build traffic to my website through increased search engine rankings, generating enquiries & customers for the business while I'm off travelling the world, living my life etc.

Some useful tips though - thanks :)

Hi there

I agree with what others have said if all you are looking to do is get a quick fix SEO back link from commenting on blogs.

What you need to do is stop trying to do everything overnight. Consistent good, decent commenting on other peoples blogs will lead to lots of backlinks in time when you are asked to guest blog, when people contact you because of your comments and the fact that you should be making valid comments and adding to the blog article in order to improve content on the internet!

Isn't this forum a case in question?
