You need to be more specific.

Do you want a custom design. I do not do that, but it should be a lot cheaper than 20k!

If you want custom software development, I do do that, and costs vary wildly depending on what you want to do. Its what very few people need and you should really look at off the shelf systems (that may need customisation) first.

Every designer/developer will use templates. Almost nobody builds from scratch anymore, everyone uses libraries of one sort of another and updates the CSS to make it look the way the client wants.

Unless a client specifies otherwise and understands that bespoke development costs more and takes longer.

But you will still reuse code chunks. You will adapt a contact form from another project. You will use a nav/menu from another project. You will use scripts and responsive layouts from other projects. Why would you start with a blank editor when you have a template with the head and body blocks already set up.

Every bespoke project isn't. It's lots of bits of existing code with some new bits added.

It's like a bespoke furniture maker. They will use joints and techniques from all the other furniture they have made. It might be unique but it's the same tenon joint used on every other bit of furniture.

You mean that is the way you would do it?
We started in 1998 and went full time in 1999, back then there were no CMS systems, we used to hand code every website that we built. We have buit many many fully bespoke websites with CMS systems coded from scratch to the clients exact needs. Not everyone was born in the plug and play generation ;)

I'm no different to you. My point is you reuse code between projects. It's not about plug and play, it's about using the same scripts to do the same thing across projects.

For example, if you have an jquery/ajax function to verify and process a contact form why rewrite each time. It makes more sense to reuse the functions.

The sites may look different and perform different functions but a lot of the core code will be the same on each.

    Do you remember this site:

The same HTML for each site (eg a template) but wildly different designs created using CSS.

Lol, yes I remember that website...

However if you will permit me to say so, you are being more than a little perdantic, the op asked for someone that could do bespoke development. Did he ask for someone that would ensure that the lines of code they were writing had never ever been written in that or similar order by anyone.

No, he doesnt care if the code is 100% unique, for whatever reason, he wants a bespoke built website, what he doesnt want is a website built using a template. That is his choice.

He wants a website that has been designed and built bespoke for him exactly how he wants it.

Yes I probably was being a bit pedantic. The reality is the OP probably meant they didn't want a site that looks like every other Divi site.

Nothing wrong with using a template/theme - it's how you configure the theme that matters. Done right and the OP would never know.

Indeed. It’s why I build bespoke plugins. Because many of the standard offering are insecure or just not very good.

Bringing this thread back on topic...

£20k is almost certainly too much to be paying unless you need some really advanced website features.

We build bespoke websites, if you (or anyone from the future) check out our portfolio (www dot square one dot digital) - you'll see that all the sites we've done are of high quality and are very different from each other.

We've got a bunch of new sites that haven't yet made it into the portfolio so just ask if you want to see them.

And I think that's really what you're getting at here - we do not use pre-built templates, themes or any no/low code tools like page builders and our clients have complete freedom around design and layouts.

Yes, some parts of code get re-used but we don't steer the design towards the code blocks we already have, we steer the design towards creating a unique and high quality web experience.

    Quality, not quantity.
