Advertise in the places your potential customers go to.

I know you are a charity but until the site becomes established advertising is one of the best ways to start.

Sorry, i should have said, I also work for a family run party supplies business and we have just launched our own website. We have an established customer base online, but we are looking to get them to use our site direct.
We also want to find the best, most cost effective ways to promote and drive customers to our shiny new website

Email everyone and tell them about the new website.

The problem you will have is convincing them to move from the existing platform to the new site.

Advertising is still a good way to gather data about the new site and identify areas that need more work. I’ve had clients with shiny new websites that needed a complete rebuild after discovering nobody liked the site.

Once you know the site works you can focus other marketing methods - of which there are many.

Can you post the link to your website? Its always good to check there is nothing major on site that needs doing before investing in getting more traffic (as you need to know that traffic has a good chance of converting).

I would personally recommend both adwords and facebook ads, but you need tracking setup for either to be worthwhile so you know where sales are coming from.

Thanks, my first thought it there needs to be more info about the USP. I realise shopify can be very template driven but it still looks a bit generic and given the product range my first thought is why can I not just buy this on amazon?

I would suggest have a more prominent about page, build trust, with pictures of the family who run the family business. Sell your individuality.

Consider setting up related products so each product page is not so stark and tone down the social media buttons (your add to cart should draw the eye not facebook etc. Anyway nothing major to worry about on the store front so that's good.

Now to promote it, email newsletters to previous customers are always good. I would consider offering some kind of discount or promotion for people who post photos on their social media account of their parties and tag your business as where they got their supplies (like 10% off next order).

Given the value of your products adwords is likely to be too expensive (unless your average order value is quite high).

I think you marketing material has got to make it clear if you are cheaper than other vendors or amazon because at the moment that I think is the biggest issue, a question of why buy from you?

Are they both new websites?

If so the shopify one looks bland an corporate and the other is very dated and clunky.

Website reviews are only for full members but it might be worth joining for just that. There are loads of things need fixing on both.

But back to your original question - there is nothing special about your services, there is lots of competition so it's going to be advertising, ebay and amazon. Customers on those channels will stick with them, you won't get them to move easily to your new website, the buyer mindset it totally different to a 'normal' shopper.

If you already have an established customer database you could try email marketing with someone like Mailchimp. You should really build a community on Facebook offering tips, advice, funny memes, content that engages etc, then link your website or use the shop buttons available on Facebook. Same applies to other social networks. Build your 'community' rather than use it as a selling platform

It's hassle for people to move from one platform to another (e.g ebay to your site) as they need to put in new payment details, register etc so you need initially to offer an incentive to swap!

Offer specific discounts or offers only available on your website, and promote this via email.

To get new clients - make sure that your site is SEO optimised, and be prepared to put the hard work in (or outsource and pay for that!)

Hi BobbyJo,

Hope these tips can help:

1. Prevent downtime.

Improving your site’s scalability will prevent slow load-times and downtime, ultimately keeping more customers on your website and driving more purchases. Make sure to build your website on an elastic cloud platform that maintains your content and application quality, even when major traffic surges hit.

2. Fertilize your fill forms.

The worst thing you could do with your landing page is to supply it with impotent fill forms; impotent in the sense that they lack a sense of urgency, or suffer from an overdose of it. It is important to remember the fundamentals of efficient web fill forms: answer fields that require specific information, a call to action or submission button, and a catchy design.

3. Focus on content rather than increased web traffic.

The volume of site visitors might be an object of satisfaction. In reality, however, not all of these visitors would stick around for long. In fact, a good majority would not go so far as clicking a link or going through the site’s menu. What is needed is content and a site design that keeps users interested.

4. Use responsive design.

The majority of consumers access sites from multiple devices, so implement responsive design to provide a consistent visitor experience no matter where customers are accessing content.
