I'm not sure about united. I've worked with their unix servers and they're not that sharp. Also pray you don't bump in any issues because you'll probably fix them yourself before they even get what your're talking about. Support is just like going through the FAQ list (or having somebody else go through the FAQ list)
Are you sure you definitely mean http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk?

I don't know any of them beyond forums and the occassional support query (we have a legacy acount with them after an acquisition we did a year or so ago) but they've always been efficient and prompt eventhough half my queries were trying to figure out the terrible Ensim control panel.

Hi there,

When searching for hosts you should look out the following things:
Hosting space with unlimited e-mails and possibly databases fro content management systems
Cpanel administration or any other online administration software
AND least but not last: SUPPORT!

What works for me, and I am using these guys for more than 3 years now is a company called eukhost.com - its affordable, but for me being able to get instant 24hour support even on sundays for installation of various programs (such as magento for example) was crusial. So I would recommend them 100%.

You must know however your needs, and try to avoid anything fancy that you do not need.

Quick Update:

Thank you all for your recommendations.

I decided to go with Vidahost in the end. Their prices, plus easy website navigation, was exactly what I was looking for. Also, thank you to Dominic for a quick response to my questions.

This has been mentioned before but never backed up with hard proof, i dont suppose you have any evidence of this benefit as it would be interesting to see. Thankfully I host my sites in the UK already anyway!!
I was sent a link by an SEO company from a google video. So I listend to it carefully. What it said was:

1. If com domain then google wil use host ip as target region unless set in the gooogle control panel
2. If co.uk etc then for many years this has been the target region unless set in the gooogle control panel

However it was used by the SEO to "advise" our customer to use a different ISP host

As a provider myself, and having used other hosts it's down to how you get on with them, how long they've been established, and support reviews.

I've been around two years, and a recent sign up said to me that they couldn't find a review about our service, which was pretty disappointing however we work on a referrals basis and don't spend on marketing, just advertising through networking and referrals.

I find that a smaller company, such as ourselves, have a greater reputation to maintain and develop in regards to quality of service and trust.

I think it's hard to define best, however would say there are many good companies out there, but as with everything, you can have a bad experience.

Our packages start at £19.99 a year and include a domain, some people view this as overselling however we've managed to keep our costs low and I don't take an income and run the business as a networking factor and learning tool.

Not to mention the fact that any host still giving out IPs like sweets without justification should be avoided...
Indeed...it's complete rubbish. 1) the internet hasn't been classfully routed for a long time, 2) Google looks at relationships between sites not the IPs. Of course it may look at IPs if it figures out all the sites on said IP are rubbish, so the spammers then have a pile of other IPs to move on to, etc...
