there may be an occasional requirement to copy all your website files into a tarball, to download

this can't be done from cPanel's File Manager, as far as I can discover

incorrect, my apologies

it's a case of clicking the folder name, in cPanel's File Manager, and then 'Compress'

this invokes a pop-up menu that offers

Zip Archive
Tar Archive
GZiped Tar Archive
Bzip2ed Tar Archive

and I choose the 2nd of these

I have been investigating hosts recently, as like many, I was fed up with issues. After much investigation, I almost went with Kristal, as many here mention, but I ended up with Hyve. If you want a top drawer set up, that is the type of firm to use. It does, however, not come cheap if you want the bells and whistles.

    +1 for Krystal.io

I moved several websites to Krystal.io last year and highly recommend them.

UK-based hosting (independent, not part of GoDaddy/123Reg group)
    Excellent customer support
LiteSpeed servers + LSCache – huge performance boost, especially for WordPress/Elementor
Easy to work with, clean cPanel, free SSL, daily backups, and transparent pricing

After dealing with slower support and random outages on previous hosts, Krystal has been a significant improvement for us.

Hosting can be a bit of a minefield with so many options out there. I run a small UK-based hosting company (Levelup-hosting.co.uk), so I spend a lot of time thinking about speed, uptime, and support. If anyone’s weighing pros and cons or has questions about what to look for, happy to share what I’ve learned over the years.

@SamBrown - is it just you? Who picks up the phone at 3am when something goes awry?

It’s just me running things, and thankfully, touch wood, I haven’t had any major issues overnight. I’ve set up alerts and processes to catch problems quickly if they do arise. In fact, I host a server for a customer in the U.S., and over the past two years we’ve had zero downtime. That’s not luck, it’s the result of being proactive and making sure potential issues are avoided before they ever become a problem.

As a fellow hosting provider, I can tell you for free, "touch wood" is a crazy term to use when discussing uptime and potentially your SLA lmao

some people may welcome the provision of a knowledgebase

Namecheap's for example is good, it includes useful comments from my fellow-customers

admittedly this doesn't answer your question, their server is in New York

We do, as long as it is an emergency and you are a client.
How do you know it’s an emergency and a client until you pick up?

Usually clients say hello before calling, and if the client is wrong he' or she's forgiven should the call wake me up.
    Don't offer emergency support if you don't have a 24/7 team/answering system.

Emergency Lines are very serious, don't offer it, or claim to, if you aren't actually 24/7. Not a good look, do you have an SLA? What obligations do you have for emergency maintenance, if you have any?
