Off topic but...

why do people still have 0800 numbers?

I always connect 0800 with a call centre. Local and mobile numbers make me think I get a real person.

This may not be the case but it’s how I perceive things

0800 is associated with free. 0345 and similar are a bit confusing since some are local charge and some are not.

I have unlimited mobile calls but it doesn't apply to everything, even 111 calls are charged. Business landline calls are ridiculously expensive, even local ones. With 0800 I am fairly certain there is not going to be any cost, any other number I'm not.

It wouldn't really deter me anyway but, for example, it would my dad who's quite happy to be ripped off left and right and center for £1,000's by random crooks but will go bats*** crazy if you leave the toilet light on. Not everyone is logical.

It wasn’t the cost. It’s more to do with perception and trust.

There was a survey a while back (can’t find it now) where companies that switched from 0800 to a local number saw an increase in leads.

I dare say that is a factor too? I think I would prefer to see a local geographic number for a 'local' business.

Cost would be an issue if I thought there was a chance I'd be waiting a long time to speak to someone. Although, when you're buying, that tends not to be a problem - those lines are always well manned.

I agree with fisicx on this one... these days 0800 numbers scream to me on non-UK companies without any physical presence, hence impossible to deal with in the event of a problem. If a company has a 'regional' number (and its easy to purchase more 'catchy' VOIP numbers, so you get one that's easy for people to remember), I would consider them to be a company with a physical presence. Of course with VOIP they still might not be, but it's all about the first perception.
