Am just watching this and a few bits have made me smile so far.

A course is being run to help single mums get back to work and the course leader has just said "if you have a bit of a headache or a bit of a tummy ache then be warned you will be disciplined for not coming into work."

Then went onto say about changing routine from watching Jeremy Kyle hehe. Looking forward to the rest of this programme

Society has encouraged this situation with benefits unfortunately, all governments are to blame though. If life is easier and more cost effective than working in Tesco people are going to choose benefits! It's simple human nature. Most people want an easy ride.

The answer is to keep tax and rents low so that work is the better option. Also we need less competition in the workplace from foreign workers so that those on benefits have jobs to do. Some simple changes to make things better but I doubt that any government will really grasp the nettle.

It seems to be a bit of a lifestyle choice doesn't it? On one hand you can't argue with it when one example was given at an income of of £300 per week and she would be better off on benefits that in employment.

How many of us starting out in business do not take that kind of regular salary out of our businesses after PAYE & NI?

Then there was the girl who wanted a job as a DJ and got offered one but turned it down the job because the last bus went at 1am and she wouldn't finish her job until 2.20.... dur!... why by a DJ then?

Same girl on a debt management plan to pay off what she owed (I think she said £75k) but on her income and outgoing forms she had listed full sky tv and wasn't prepared to give that up! Why is there a choice? grrr

I agree, but these people don't have the same morals or get up and go of normal people. They are looking for the easy way out and the benefit system provides it.

Most of these people have found that they can have foreign holidays, plasma TVs and sit in all day on their backsides doing nothing. The first step to be taken is that people should be made to do some sort of voluntary work whilst in receipt of benefits. At least the community would get some benefit in return and those who are genuine might find a way back to work. Those who are lazy and want to watch TV all day will soon be caught out though!

I think, personally, that Canada (I thinks it's Canada anyway) has a very good system, I heard that they pay benefits to people on low income wages, encouraging people to work, even if they can only do/have time to do lower paid work.

I remember being out of work a few years ago, and I decided to check out the job centre for work, all they were interested with was getting me to sign on, I explained that I was (back then) living with my parents and did not need any money from the state, they persisted!

Then just before I got my current (due to end next month) job, my temping dried up and I eventually went to sign on, this is where I get confused. I was given a form to take to all the interviews I attended to get them signed to prove I was going to them. Thankfully I didn't have to as I got a job a few days after my initial sign on.

The job centre then calls the people on the list at random to make sure all is correct and that I did actually try to get the job.

This then begs the question.... How are people managing to stay on benefits so long? There is either.. a shortage of jobs? Or the job centre isn't actually carrying out what they say they will... Maybe they have some vacancies???

Food for thought!
