Hi

I have just checked a few of my competitors backlinks and they seems to have lots and lots of blog comment replies with their link on (some have over 1500 links)

The blogs have nothing to do with the niche

How do I compete with this, also I thought that the last google update meant this practise no longer worked

Do I go down this route and post on lots of blogs (if so is there a quick way of doing this?)

Someone told me its all about quality not quantity of links, but my competitors with the 1500+ links are getting on page 1.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thet aren't getting on page 1 because of the blog comments. It will be a combination of the onsite stuff and some good quality links. They may well be using the blog comments to disguise the good links.

I too have been looking at competitors backlinks and a lot of the companies on page 1 have well over used keywords in their anchor text but still rank which I don't understand how after the google updates as I thought they were stopping over use of keywords in links and I'm talking exact match keywords too. Blog comments are mainly no follow so I wouldn't waste your time, I would keep trying to get the really good links that will last but these seem to be like looking for a needle in a hay stack at the moment or at least for me anyway.

Just because people have obvious spammy links and ranks it doesn't follow that the spammy links are what is making them rank. They are probably ranking in spite of those links rather than because of them. Who knows - they may even have disavowed the lot of them.

Sadly a lot of spam does work still. However it is getting harder and harder to rank by such means particularly for the longer term.

In terms of backlinks a steady flow (or even trickle) of good links seems to currently held a LOT more than lots of questionable ones. Try to find the good links in your competitor profiles and understand how they got those rather than worrying about those that are probably not relevant.

Blog comments give the benefit of increase traffic of the site but only when the quality of the blog and your comment is good and helpful. If blog is giving dofollow link then also it will help you to make your user profile strong and will help in increase traffic of the link which is connected to your profile/name.

You should ignore this type of over activity and go for quality offpage activities like guest posting, forum posting, local listing, blogging, article submission, video submission etc. But don’t forget to follow Google’s content guidelines https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en during building link for the website.

Recent Google updates have changed the way that backlinks are perceived. Natural linking patterns are considered ideal. The best types of links are from high quality sources, with authority and relevant to the subject matter and with variations of key terms.

Maxim,

we would rather agree with the comments above saying that your competitors may be ranking not because of these irrelevant comment links but because of many other important SEO factors (such as properly optimized content, site structure, social media signals, etc.).

After all, as you said: "I have just checked a few of my competitors backlinks", but note that they may have lots of other high-quality links coming from relevant high PR websites.

What we advise you to do is to run a comprehensive analysis of your competitors with WebMeUp. The software lets you scan your competitors' sites, check their backlinks profiles and a lot more.

Watch this video for more detail.

Hope it will help you find the reason for your competitor's rankings success.
