Backlinks to Avoid

In years gone by, you could buy cheap and cheerful links from any old directory, article site, social bookmarking, etc and get away with it.

The Google algorithm has shifted and now it pays to assess sites before you guest post or buy a link.

Here's a couple of simple tips about backlinks to avoid.

Rule #1 - if it has a ton of topics unrelated to your sector, run the other way.

Example... Your site is about women's clothing. Ideal sites for you would be ones that have content about women's clothing, possibly accessories, or clothing for men and children.

Building backlinks from sites that have Mumbai real estate, vaping e-liquid, how to get rich from bitcoin, or other completely unrelated content is not going to accomplish what you seek.

Rule #2 - if it has great authority, but terrible trust, exit stage right (run).

Cheap backlink sites will flaunt their authority, which they may have picked up with paid homepage links from elsewhere, or the domain had authority and was dropped before they picked it up.

Trust Flow is something that erodes quickly when sites sell links, and indiscriminately place dofollow links to untrustworthy sites. Poor editorial control is how trust goes in the toilet.

Example... A site has authority of 50 but trust of 15. That disparity is a clear sign that the site links to anyone and that a link from them may give you a boost, or drag you down with it.

Links with high authority and low trust, when combined with more of the same, tend to make website rankings volatile. They bounce, or yo-yo, up and down, not settling in a good place for long.

Conclusion

If you want stable rankings gain, build at a moderate velocity, on highly relevant sites, which have similar trust/authority scores.

There's hundreds of other tips, from geolocation to nofollow and unlinked mentions. Sorry, but that'll come later.

IT's just some obvious advice, usually you really build some pages on high authority domains and then do some promotions of them with the time which will pass later on. How do you plan to make it anyway ? Of course new page will be low trust.

I'd add EAT (expertise, authority, trust) to this. When scoping out a prospective website, ensure that getting a backlink from them will either:

Demonstrate your website is a trusted company
Show you are an authority in your industry
Demonstrate that you are an expert in your field

Thanks for that, Majestic's Trust Flow is always the main port of call for me!
I've got a site with a trust flow of 7 but still rank well for all my chosen keywords. So it's probably not useful a score.

There are many factors that you should consider. A few years ago it was PR (PageRank), while today many marketers are looking for high DA (Domain Authority - Moz) and that's the most important thing for them. For me is important to check their backlink structure and check their links. If they are real, coming from legit sites, you can visit the page and manually check some links. Also, their social media accounts. Some sites have great metrics (Moz, Majestic, Ahrefs etc.), even social media profiles, but when you visit for example their Facebook page and they have 40k likes, but the last post liked or comment only a few people, then you know it's not legit. You can buy everything today to make your profile/site looks amazing - likes, shares, visitors. You have to check all factors to be sure before moving forward.

Pointless. Google takes no notice of this. High DA doesn't mean anything.

Why? It's not a ranking signal so of zero value when building links.

I agree, but it's a fact. Google doesn't care about any metrics, but many people are looking only DA and that only matters for them.

Just saying, that everyone can manipulate with DA, Alexa, social media profiles... so you don't have to blind focus on that.

In the context of backlinks to avoid (the topic of this thread) the people who are looking for DA aren't the sort of people who understand SEO.

So, basically, we have to give priority to guest posting?
No. Follow the advice @webgeek suggests. You may get some good links from the right sort of guest post but 99.9% of the sites accepting your posts will be dross.

It's related to backlinks you should avoid and I was talking about that people should focus on more factors/metrics, not just DA.

Here's an example: networth2013 dot com site about celebrities
DA 39
TF 0
Top anchors: "get free high quality hd wallpapers..."

If I have a site related celebrities I won't try to get a backlink from that site, but many "SEO workers" would and pay for it, believe me.
