I have noticed a few sites that have lots of back links listed and when I check the links they are all links from the sites internal pages, how come google counts these as back links?

Thanks

It's not checking backlinks, it's checking links.

Try links:mysite.co.uk -mysite.co.uk and you will see all the true inbound links (not backlinks that's so 1990s)

Even more confused now. A backlink is NOT an internal link (according to everybody else's defintion). A backlink (inbound, inlink etc) is ONLY a link from an external source.

The Google links:URL tool shoes all links to the URL which is why you need to add -URL to get rid of all the internal links.

hmmmm, yee of little faith,

I can promise you 100% that if you link from an internal page to th ehome page google will accept it. some website have nothing but internal links.

Got nothing to do with faith, it's about your definition of a backlink which is somewhat at variance to everybody elses defintion.

Agree that Google doesn't care if a link is internal or inbound, it will still show up in the links: tool. If you want to strip out the internal links you have to add the -mysite.com.
