This is shocking advice, I'm surprised the mods have not removed this post. It should be titled "How To Damage Your Website And Waste Your Time"

Additionally - Christina, blog commenting is a total waste of time and resources in my eyes. I've never met anyone who can attribute success in either conversions or SERPS by using this method.

I'm curious to fund out why you think it's good and what convinced you to start doing this? Was this an article you read on the internet or advice from an SEO company?

Admittedly the last 3 bullet points are sort of greyhat techniques.

Perhaps I should have made it clearer that the most important thing I was saying was create awesome high quality content - some of that backlinking stuff is just to support that and isn't compulsory.

Your business is Floor sanding services and it is local, I would suggest you to do submit your business profile on third party local listing sites and also get reviews from your past clients and it will very effectively for your local business.
try to submit to directories it will work, as it works for my one: eurodecorating.co.uk
bathroom fitters london

No offence, but your website is not in the top 100 results on the SERP for "bathroom fitters london". You have some very good backlinks, though. And the trust flow of your website is 26 which is pretty good.

For "painter london" your site is on 35th position which is not bad. Good job! What were your positions before the business listings?

To: Christina.

A lot of the advice on here is "Indian SEO"-type; geared towards selling reports, articles and link-building services. It is outdated. It is dangerous to a commercial site where significant money has been invested.

Here's what tends to happen:

- A western geek works out how to game the latest Google algorithm, usually by artificially getting a natural sign of quality e.g. backlinks.

- He boasts of this in a specialist forum.

- Webmasters jump on this and overdo it x 1000.

- Indian SEO services pick up on this and sell it cheaply as a tactic to small Western businessmen.

- Google notices that more ****** sites are showing up on its front page. And, surprise, its staff also read forums, too!

- Their algorithm changes to compensate. Surprise! the previous sign of quality is now a sign of spam! Many sites drop in their index. Thank you, small online businessman, for highlighting the me-too quality of your operation with your 20,0000 profile-backlinks. Or whatever.

- Sites that are simply popular, because they offer something very desirable, do not have the same indicators as sites-on-seo-steroids, so they can usually weather any update.

- The small businessman curses on UKBusinessForums. Bloody Google. Blasted SEOs!

Afterwards, he may have to start a new website.

- Use a backlink checker on your competitors' websites. Make a note of any good ones as you go along. Then go back to them and see if you can get listed also.

Time-consuming, boring, but I don't think you need a lot of 'em, nowadays.

Just avoid too many of one kind or any tempting-and-easy-but-low-class ones. Your site should be listed where you can get customers from, not directories from 2009.

Wow, 3 pages of answers and almost all the suggestions are under handed spammy rubbish.

how to get reliable authority links...

1) Be an expert on your subject/sector/business.
2) Authority sites will link to you

Look at Martin Lewis, how many of the techniques suggested here does his site use? How many authority sites link to www.moneysavingexpert.com

So the question is how can you apply his model to your business?

There are countless programs on tv about doing up houses/business - how many of those need floors sanding? how many have you approached? why not.

Magazines, movies, TV - how can you get yourself or your service on TV? Dragons Den? Even if you don't want/need the money, every business on there gets some publicity/links.

Have you sanded any famous floors? Boris? Cameron? Buckingham Palace? Beckham? - Papers/magazines love this.

What do you know that the general public doesn't? There are probably things that you take for granted that your customers don't know. What are they. What mistakes to people make before/after their floors are sanded, why and what should they do. Tell people about it. This is what Martin seems to do most of the time.

Forget about trying to get links, think about making people want to link to you.

To: Nick Grogan.

Q. What does one ultimately want?
A: More leads.

Q: Where can one get leads?
A: Google.

Q: How does one get leads from Google?
A: Be top of the SERPS.

Which leads to SEO.

Now, it is a good idea to create the authoritative site in your niche: nice long articles with pictures and lists, a helpful online widget, a superstar boss who's famous locally, a very obvious 'click me' box to get the lead. If fact, it's probably easier than being diverted into the byroads of SEO.

But, you can always help Google along. Just find where your competitors get their (lead generating) links from and see if you can get some too. If they're entirely appropriate and appear over time .... who can complain? No one. Not even an algorithm.

But beware! Cheapo/grey hat SEO guys can destroy your ranking in the long run; they'll give your site indicators which will help Google push it down the SERPs a year later and forever.

Which leads to SEO
Or - advertise - fast, effective and immediate leads. No need to do any sSEO>

But all Cristine needs to do is fix the site. A bit of simple on-site optimisation and they will be #1 on Gogole.

Q. What does one ultimately want?
A: More leads.
A: Sales, which is similar, but not quite the same thing.

Q: Where can one get leads?
A: Google.
A: A massive assumption. Many companies generate all/most of their sales offline, and even online Google is not necessarily the best/only source.

Q: How does one get leads from Google?
A: Be top of the SERPS.
A: Or advertising, or being mentioned on sites that rank highly (BBC, newspapers, moneysavingexpert, mumsnet)

Which leads to SEO.
I have a feeling this is where you started, rather than finished.

Just find where your competitors get their (lead generating) links from and see if you can get some too.

This is interesting. How do you which links are lead generating?

think about making people want to link to you.

Why should I link to you? what's a link about your site going to do for mine?......... Forget one-ways, you don't own a 2000 page resource site packed with subject matter that attracts 500k of users each year. If you want one-ways, then you need a different type of site totally and 4 years to build it up, then folk got a reason to plug you, but they aint doing without a huge top reason, know what I mean :)

Why would I want a link from you? Are the people browsing your website likely to be looking for the service/product I provide? If not, you don't want to link to me and I don't want a link from you - everybody is happy.

But if people on your site would be interested in my site, and I have useful, relevant information on my site, why wouldn't you link to my site?

Perhaps this is why Scottish Power amongst others link to my site?

If i was going to write a blog comment, for a link, i'd do it for potential refer traffic as opposed to any seo value.

For local businesses i think SEO is now a bit hit and miss. I used to rank top for all sorts, for about 2 years, but as time went buy google very slowly got clever and devalued the links. Once the leads dried up i couldn't be arsed to do any more SEO so i decided to set up a load of adwords on exact match. Now when we go quiet i spend about £100 quid on adwords and within the space of two weeks it gets us enquiries that equate to tens of thousands, and we get to pick the best work and it ultimately makes better sense than SEO. Plus you don't have to make your pages so content heavy so your site then converts better.

Far better than waiting to re rank your site after it gets kicked down or hoping people using google to search decide to ignore all the ads, all the google places rubbish and what ever else google decide to throw in front of the organics.

I have read this thread with a great big smile on my face - there's nothing like the subject of SEO to get the debate going.

Anyhoo...

Number 1 - Why do you (the op) think that it's hard to do business when you're not listed on page one of Google?

Have you not heard of pounding the pavement and generating leads offline?

There are hundreds of ways you can do this, so many in fact that that I'm not even going to try to list them here.

Number 2 - Blog commenting is a complete waste of time because nearly every link will be a 'No Follow' link which Google will ignore anyway. In fact, 'link building' doesn't work, not like it used to anyway.

Approaching SEO in a way that only benefits you is the wrong way to go about it.

Think about how we do business offline, it's about building and nurturing relationships with PEOPLE.

Because the internet is a faceless place, we seem to forget that a PERSON built that website that you're trying to get a link from and PEOPLE go to Google to search for stuff.

All these are PEOPLE that you should connect with and build and nurture relationships with. Only then, once you have provided value to all of these people and proved that you're an authority in your market will the PEOPLE that own these authority websites start to link to you - and do it gladly.

SEO is about adding value. If you can do that through your own site and through sites that you partner with you ranking will rise.

Carry on doing what you're doing and you'll carry on going backwards.

Ben

Ben, I know there are many other ways to promote our business rather than Google. However, being on the first page is the best way to have 100% Free Ad 24/7. Thousands of people are looking for floor sanding in London each month on Google. If some of them open our price page, it's very probable that some of them will give us a call. Because they will like our rates. Because of these affordable rates we can't afford an expensive advertisement campaign!

This thread is about backlinks, which implies the OP is interested in Google SERPS. (I don't know if people optimise for Bing any more. )

There are certainly other ways to get leads.

My personal opinion: Another tip to the OP: don't 'go down the rabbit hole' with SEO. You can spend a lot of time working on things which are tangential to the core business.

Work out what a Great Deal would be in your industry, present it professionally, real slick like, and then study marketing and advertising tricks so that when people get to the site or call or email you, you have a set of responses that help close a sale.

I would aim to have a great high-class product rather than compete on price. I just feel everyone's undercutting each other in everything, these days, and that leads to shoddy goods and cheesed-off 'bottom feeders' and vendors. Just my 2p.

Because unless the content is stuff people are searching for and want to read it's a pointless exercise. You sand and polish floors. People will see your adverts or find you on a search engine and visit your site because they want their floors sanding. They don't want to read your blog.

We have a parquet floor need sanding and polishing. You may well be ideally suited to do the job but after looking the site I have no idea where you are located or if you can do the job. All the backlinks in the worth (authority or not) aren't going to drum up new business until you fix the site.
Hits nail fairly and squarely in the head!

I took a quick look at your site and was totally overwhelmed by the amount of text - that makes finding relevant information too hard to find - I'd suggest most people will give up and go elsewhere.

Reduce your text copy, focus on key things your potential customers need to know!

Our home page is not an article. It's not meant to be interesting for all kinds of people. Those who need to hire a professional floor sanding company in London will read it. The heatmap installed on our website proves it! Moreover, there is a gallery page for people who prefer to see solid facts instead of reading about them.

So are you saying that bounce is low and conversions are improving?

You know about your business and the services you offer. Prospective clients don't - they are just investigating options. I spoke to your representive on the phone yesterday evening and ended up feeling the same way I do when I visit the site - I have no idea if you can do the job for me or not.

Take another look at your gallery, it's just a bunch of pictures of floors. I have no idea what type of floors they are, if these are before or after picures, if they have been polished or sealed and so on.

I get the feeling you are not willing to make any changes to the site but just want to pay for link building.

Thousands of people are looking for floor sanding in London each month on Google.
Are you really sure about this? If you are getting your data from the Google keyword tools remember these are notoriously inaccurate and more importantly these stats related to ADWORDS not organic searches.

First of all focus on your website to create it trust worthy in the eyes of visitors.
1. Create relevant, updated and fresh quality content.
2. Clear and smooth navigation.
3. Put complete and authentic address of your business place and submit your business into the GOOGLE Map for the trust visibility.
4. Create accounts in local listing sites and citation platforms according to the your country.
After these steps you thing about authority backlinks.
