Basically what you do is write a unique article and then submit it to a site with your link on the article. Best to keep it no more than 500 words and submit it to a site that has related content to your own. About.com is an example of this kind of site.

Don't write the same article and submit it to loads of sites though as tis will only hurt your cause.

This helps value your site in googles eyes and create an effective link popularity campaign.

Hope this helps

My opinion is that article websites are a waste of time because Google in particular does not like duplicate content.

You submit 1 article to 1 article website.

Before you know it RSS scrapers have picked up the article and listed it on thousands of websites. Okay you might think, that means my link is on loads of articles, but no, most of these sites will be filtered from the search results because it's duplicate content.

In my opinion.

You are best off creating a blog on your own domain, and writing your own content on a weekly or monthly basis. Make sure you only have an extract in your RSS feed (can be easily done in Wordpress at a click on a button) and write content that people want to link to and submit to social media sites.

Long term this would be much better.

Duplicate content can be an issue with article marketing but that doesn't mean that it's not a good idea in general.

First off, it's unlikely that a single article will be reproduced thousands of times. It's more likely that your article will pop up a couple dozen times - and include links back to your site. The value of those links is debatable in terms of SEO (as was pointed out above) but they are paths to your site which humans may find and use.

You can also use a submission service that gets around some of the duplicate content issues by allowing you to create multiple versions of an article but you will pay £20+/ month for that service.

More to the point, articles give you a lot of flexibility beyond simply submitting them to article sites. Personally I might use a single article (a) onsite (b) broken up into multiple blog posts or as part of a newsletter (c) for the local paper (d) as an incentive in offline marketing (ie. a free report as the hook in an ad) (e) tweaked into a useful press release for submission online or (f) on another more popular site than my own.

Having said all that, I would agree with Darren in that a well-maintained, informative blog should probably be your first option.

Articles should certainly be part of your overall marketing strategy - but you're better off looking at them as written content that can be changed and recycled through a whole host of potential uses.

Focus on putting great content at the heart of your marketing first and then choose the right vehicles to use to distribute it.

NB: Feel free to drop me a line if you like and I can point out a few resources worth considering.

For article submission is important because when you wrote an article that related to your site it is considered as a backlinks and what I've done is I'm writing article and submit it.

It doesn't like it in terms of the search results, but if you are submitting articles for backlinks then what does it matter? You still get the links.

Not really, google gives each link a score and the same articles on hundreds of syndicated sites will get a very low score. The reason is simple: everyone is doing it. The easier a link is to obtain, the lower the value of that link.

The purpose of the article should be to generate interest and ultimately increase you sales so post the article on your own site (not blog) and set it up for syndication. This means you get the credit for the article and you get a nice bunch of visitors via the syndication. If someone picks up on the article they may well blog about it, digg it or add it to stumbleupon. This can bring in more visitors. Maybe someone will even link to your from their site with an endoresment - this link is worth more than all the others put together and will help your ranking.

The google webmaster blog explains all this in some detail.

Y'all seem to be forgetting the point.

The article is for people to read. It should be informative and interesting and provide value.

If all you are doing is writing articles to drive traffic to your site then the effort is of little value. you would be far better off spending that time improving your conversion rate on the actual website.

And article submission will have almost zero effect on your ranking.

So to answer your question, google doesn't care as it's not taking any notice anyway.

Good point, BUT would you want sites from "bad neighbourhoods" linking to you? How many of them carry any weight and are the links sites in your niche. Google in particular is paying much more attention to who links to you and the quality / authority of the site.

Personally, I think your likely to get better quality links with a blog than you are submitting it to article sites.

My opinion. Although it is best to get links from unique IP's, MANY of the article directories out there are Pants with a capital 'P'.

I done a test and submitted quite alot of unique, well written articles and submitted them to a list of article directories. Some of them the big players such as Ezine Articles, Go Articles, Article Alley etc etc.... and the rest to other ones which still had a decent PR and Alexa rank.

My findings......... the big sites reviewed and approved my articles quickly (within 1 - 2 weeks max).... whilst the others.... 6 - 7 months later.... are still in review and will probably be in review for as long as those sites are online.

Why you ask?! Simply because many many months ago when article marketing became this big craze and the best way to obtain relevent one way links, people jumped on the band wagon, bought a cheap domain name and set up a custom built (cough... ArticleDashboard) article directory. THEN, after a month or two of getting HEAPS of articles to manually approve, most of which were probably spam or sites that did not follow the guidelines......... they just stopped bothering with the site, which has left billions of articles in no mans land waiting to get approved.

My evaluation of article directories: I know of companies that are at the top of page 1 for very competitive niches and have got there MAINLY because they have hundreds of unique articles in the top directories such as Ezine Articles. All the same IP address, but sites like Ezine Articles are an authority site, and all submitted content is reviewed. Google will see regular content added to this site with your links on and give your site a boost in relation to their article content (keywords). The key is gradual AND consistant.

Me... I have now picked maybe 4 - 6 GOOD article directories and am now submitting unique content to them daily. Also, the big directories get crawled ALL the time, and the majority of articles will get indexed. Other Pants directories that have become stagnent will get crawled far less.

That's just my two pence worth as far as article directories are concerned!
