How safe is it just to buy a themeforest theme and upload it as is?

I just can't see how a licence as cheap as they are can possibly cover the images, graphics, etc. used in the themes.

Are they all potentially a ticking timebomb and are we heading for the same problems as with templatemoster?

I use them for other stuff and they look fair enough to me. I would not anticipate any problems as long as you have proof of payment. Some people may tell you otherwise but if you buy something in good faith there is little chance of getting into trouble if it goes wrong.

I think he means the images / photos inside the themes.

whilst some of these images will belong to the Author of the theme. Alot are taken from stock websites.

Either way: I would change the images completely... regardless of where they came from.
Get the theme, but by all means - make it your own :)

It's not very good when you come across 2 websites that look the same and use the same photos :)

Yes, it's the image, graphics, icons etc. I'm talking about.

I asume these come with the theme when you get it, and it's then up to you to change them?

The main images in sliders etc. would be easy to change but what about little icons, buttons etc. how can you be sure they are safe to use?

Yeah, it's unfortunate that people see a theme, think it is great, and think it's just a case of downloading it and they will have a great site.

From what I can see it's the quality of the images used in the demo themes that make them so good.

Themes may help with webdesign but they are not really an alternative, which unfortunately punters don't seem to realise.

I know. Read the terms and conditions on template monster. Then get back to us with the answer as i don't like reading terms.

You would think that there is a grey area as istock have talk of insurance should you get sold an image that is dubious.

I would just tell anyone who tried to claim and image fee off me for a theme i bought from a website to piss off. Maybe you are worryin too much.

And make sure any server-side functions, javascript and other code doesn't leave you open to hacks or other nasties.

All of the themes are checked for copyright and all themes are tested to a high standard for the code.

They are cheap because they sell so many, some authors have made 40k+ sales, so a $50 WP theme will make them a mint.

Support is generally good and only the highest quality themes get in (check the forums, daily there are 10's of posts saying "I have been rejected, help me").

In my experience, they are perfectly safe to use.

As above, been using them for years and NEVER had an issue. They are a great resource for improving productivity for a non designer like me whom has clients that want a new site.

With a few of the themes, when you download and use, the images are replaced with SAMPLE IMAGES when you import the xml and from there you can start adding your own which we all would do anyway I would imagine. They are also a doddle to make fully customised so out of a gazzilion sites out there the chances of an identical site being spotted are next to nowt IMHO...

The peripheral, structural images are perfectly fine to use in accordance with the site (and developers) terms and conditions.

Fill your boots kiddo, some great themes at great prices on there.

DIRTY CODE??? Never had an issue and I have bought quite a few people.

Had 2 issues with TF themes and code, both were running WP, and the theme had Timthumb built in, which was hacked not so long ago.

Both sites were used by "noobs" who were unaware of the issues, and both sites got hacked repeatedly. I cleaned them up and updated TT to the latest version and been fine since.

I personally wouldn't use TT, but a lot of TF authors do, so be aware when downloading older themes (although most should have been updated by now).

Good point and prompts me to add that when I do use TF I ALWAYS remove TT....in fact, when I use WP I remove TT as it has proven as you state to be a suspect file open to potential intrusion. It IS NOT a crucial element to your WP site.

You can always use the built-in API for resizing if you wish....
