Are Google trying to trick us in to opening Workspace accounts?

I have numerous free Google accounts and Gmail accounts.

Recently, when I log in to Gmail it asks me to set up additional smart features, which appear to be Workspace related.

Would accepting the Workspace smart features in a personal, free Gmail account automatically sign you up to a workspace account?

If so, is this Google trying to trick free users to move to Workspace accounts?

The likelihood is you already have a workspace account. You just haven’t activated it yet.

I've just set up a brand-new account to test it.

It looks as though it automatically creates a free version of Workspace just by opening a new personal account.

Switching on the smart features in Gmail doesn't appear to trigger an upgrade, but something to keep an eye on.

One assumes therefore should you activate the account you will be bombarded with marketing junk suggesting you upgrade to paid services.
