I just got cold called from some search engine company and when I told them I was already no.1 for phrase they looked it up and said "yeah, but thats for google maps and google are gonna be removing the map from the page"

It seems incredibly unlikely as google are going more and more towards having images in the serps.

(People like pictures.)

Ultimately, map listings will probably end up being paid. But that's another story.

I agree. There's truly a tendency to add more visuals to search results, especially when it comes to local businesses. Have a look at the carousel local search recently added for the US. It's yet another proof they're going deeper into better representation for local businesses.
