Anyone used 1&1?

Most normal people just suck it up and get on with it, it is just the people that have a chip on their shoulder and complain about anything.
Clearly you have not taken the time to read all of the comments in here so I won't bother responding to this further.

But why do you need the others support?
What a silly comment.
Precisely! Another daft comment written by someone who has not taken the time to read the thread.

OK I will repeat myself, so please pay attention this time. They claim that "Professional, technical support by e-mail and phone is availabe (sic) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

I contacted them 11 days ago because my site had performance issues. I found out elsewhere that they had had a major issue that had dragged their whole system down but I am still waiting on an acknowledgement or a reply. Can you suggest how I could deal with this myself?

I have been doing this for ten years and I have had a good look around as they say. I do not contact anyone's support if there is a possibility of sorting out problems myself. My problems with 1&1 are numerous and documented over several years. They are not "How do I do this" issues. I have a catalogue of problems with performance, admin, billing and issues like this.

I have been keeping an eye on the thread TYVM - but it seems that there is a smat of jealousy about them advertising on TV and getting business from it.

Give them a call now - I am sure they will answer :D

Then why did you disregard the answer I have already provided to this point?

They won't damage the website design business and I have no problem with them advertising on telly, apart from the fact that are probably telling lies about the level of service that people can expect. Many people will sign up with them and then come to guys like me when they realise that it doesn't work and that they cannot do it themselves.

Have a wee think about how long B&Q, Homebase and Wickes have been using telly advertising. Do you think this destroyed the joinery and building industries? I once fitted my own kitchen and the experience just made me vow never to try anything like that again. Same thing applies here. ;)

No, but if something isn't working to do with the hosting or you need something enabling such as a PHP module etc. There are a lot of things a Web Host's support get asked.

I spend mid xxx on hosting every month, it is vital that customer service is good else I simply wouldn't use them and I am lucky I have found one with great customer support. It is not that I need them to teach me how to code, but if something goes wrong or I have a query about something quite technical (PHP Modules, config files, mysql config, php config) then that is what I pay them for. To "support" me.

All of the stuff you mentioned, is your job not a web host. Just cause your not compatant doesn't mean it's their fault. It means you need to paying a developer.

Because I think you are missing a trick.

Let me explain...

B&Q, Wickes etc. are shops (retail companies that are customer facing).

One&One are a web business (this means they do not have a shop, or staff to talk to face to face). They most likely use a call center that is handling 100's of calls and a support team that answers e-mail queries when they can.

Have you tried calling their support team this morning?

I think you have the wrong perspective on this.

In my opinion, the issue started with "Are 1&1 any good?". The guy who started it asked because he had seen the adverts for their site builder.

Near enough every reply on this thread to start with ran along the lines of "Get a professional to do it" or "use Wordpress". Not one person has said "Talk to me, I'll build the site for you for £xxx". It has now evolved in to how good their support and service is.

No jealousy at all in this thread. So let's not all fall out over some crappy company. It's Friday!!! :D

From experience, the support team have no idea what they are talking about. It's an indian call centre, and they put you on hold more often than talk to you.

Indeed - TGIF.

I guess my angle was that there is going to be a mixed bag of responses.

Some people will have used 1&1 and had a great experience, some will have had an awful one.

Some people use B&Q and had a great experience, some will have an awful one.

The bigger the business, the more 'reviews' there are - and people only tend to write reviews that are bad (rather then taking time out of their days to write something positive'.

Same with newspapers - they only communicate bad news, crisis, war rather than positive uplifting feel good stories.

My experience with 1&1 has been no problems, but not used their website design services.

To answer the OP - everyone will have a different perspective, just because they are advertising on TV does not make them good.

Best way to find a website designer is to do some research, look at their design portfolio, chat to some of their customers, compare their prices.

Marketing Quotes - Out :D
