Anyone had experience with GoDaddy?

I use godaddy for domains and that is all. I would not use there hosting and I certainly would not use there web builder or indeed any other like minded DIY website builder (wix, 1&1 etc...)

Depending on your budget your better off with a developer

never use one of these free / cheap websites. you might as well just pin a piece of paper on a tree in your street with your business name on it, more people will see it.

google hates these mass produced sites so you'll be hard pushed to get anywhere with it. it might cost more but its worth it paying a professional to make you one, or to save money use wordpress and a premium theme and make it yourself from there.

I would recommend looking for a hosting company that offers fast hosting as it is a ranking factor.
Also make sure they offer good 24x7 support ideally via instant live chat.
It is so important to be able to get hold of the company you are hosted in just a few clicks rather than having to wait hours for support.

i once built a website via godaddy and it was very very easy thanks to their website builder tool. However, if you are making a professional e-commerce website, I would not suggest godaddy. There are much better solutions such as shopify. If you are not building an online store, you can go for godaddy.

The very large hosts such as GoDaddy, 123-Reg, 1&1 and so forth invariably provide terrible, non personal support, and overcrowded poor performing servers.

@pjohnstone if you're looking to add eCommerce in the future then WordPress could be a good idea. You can add WooCommerce, which many of our clients use, and will give you full eCommerce features.

If you want to make this easy it's probably best to install WooCommerce now and add a WooCommerce theme, so adding the shop pages and functionality in the future will be a smooth process.

For a UK business/UK targeted website it's definitely a good idea to choose good UK web hosting. Your visitors will get better performance which can make a real difference, especially for eCommerce, and Google also takes performance into consideration in ranking your website.

For a business, and especially if you're looking to add eCommerce in the future you may want to choose specialised eCommerce hosting. You can then benefit from increased performance, and some providers will also provide a free SSL certificate and other benefits.

Regarding who to choose, this has been asked lots of times. If you do a search on the forums you should find plenty of hosting recommendations, hopefully including us.

If you have any questions feel free to get in touch, we'd be happy to help.

Best of luck,

Dan

GoDaddy has frustrated me a lot. I always used them for domains, and I would then use the nameservers to hook them up to a decent shared host such as Dreamhost.

I decided to try GoDaddy as a host, and also to work with cPanel (which Dreamhost does not use) so bought some basic GoDaddy Linux hosting.

There hasn't been too much downtime but I find I'm the sort of person who tends to push my website quite hard in terms of performance...therefore I'm on the phone about twice a month to support asking questions and asking why certain things break/stop working.

Whatever host you use, you can increase the performance substantially by using a free reverse proxy and cache such as CloudFlare. CloudFlare is well known to WordPress webmasters looking for that extra layer of security. It tends to do some of the heavy lifting in terms of content delivery, especially if you have lots of images on your site (as I do).

I'm glad I've used GoDaddy for the reason that I have learnt a hell of a lot about diagnosing and fixing problems. When I've been on the phone to support tech I have often been the one who solves the problem there and then while we discuss the issues and the staff have been grateful for the tips.

If you're wanting a great host with minimum hassle, choose DreamHost. If you don't mind rolling up your sleeves now and then, GoDaddy is okay.
