To be honest it depends on the industry you are in and who your customers are. B2C businesses are the most likely to benefit from social media projects, but what can be gained varies largely on what you are selling and how.
In my opinion, Facebook and Twitter are best used as marketing and brand awareness tools - increasing knowledge about your company, your industry, products and services. Using the sites to post special offers and information as well as links to your full website can sometimes lead to sales.
However it is really important to keep your content relevant and interesting and I wouldn't bother looking at purchasing 'likers' or 'followers' because in the end they are not interested in what you do.
With facebook specifically you can opt to have a vanity URL (i.e. a URL that can be altered to match your business name) after you have 25 likes. This is a handy tool for promoting your page.
Pinterest is also a useful tool for those that are in a more visual industry - using it to post images of designs, food and clothing are the most commonly found marketing strategies.
There are several pieces of software out there that you can use to help with posting on sites like these. Tweetdeck and Hootsuite are 2 of the most commonly talked about on here.
On the whole though, I would say there is little evidence that I am aware of proving that any social media site increases sales on a dramatic scale. Its often better to see it as a useful tool that is an instant way of connecting with you customers.
Hope this helps.
Add value to people's lives, treat them well and you'll go far!
Hi there,
I have a small company and I am considering using social media as a marketing tool however was wondering if anyone had any advice for me?
any advantages or disadvantages of using it? or which form of social media I should use?
Thankyou
As others have said it really depends who your customers are, and which social media platforms they're using. As with any marketing defining the market (customer) first, then the message (what you want to tell them) and only then decide the media to use, i.e. where do they hang out? I've produced a "7 Social Media Marketing Mistakes to Avoid" report if you'd be interested in seeing that.
