Hello,

I have a poorly laptop, namely that the [del] key doesn't work; well it works occasionally.

Is there any alternative way of pressing [del] particularly when I switch the laptop on from cold and need to log in? Someone told me that there is a way to bring an on screen keyboard up, but I'm not sure how to do this.

Thanks in anticipation
James

Have you cleaned under the del key?

If you can get logged on you can alter the user profile in control panel to not require CTRL ALT DEL (will automatically log in to your user/s). Though this has security issues in the fact that anyone could swith on your laptop and be logged in.
If you are on a network you may not be able to change the settings due to policies set by the server.

Hi James,

Control Panel> Ease of Access (or it might be "Accessibility Options")> Ease of Access Center, you should have an option somewhere by now to start on-screen keyboard, and there are also settings to start this on boot.

If you still have problems, let us know which operating system, as I think the Control Panel varies slightly for each.

One of my staff had a laptop with keyboard issues, so we ordered a new keyboard off the web (cost £40 new) and took it to a local IT shop who fitted it (£30). So, for £70 it was as good as new....

Longer term, that could be an easier solution that workarounds.

How does that help me login to the computer, from when I switch it on from cold?

I think they were responding to the thread title ("any alternative to ctrl alt del") James, not the content of the thread. ;)

Dependant on the value to you of the laptop, Ampheon makes a valid contribution. I have an old laptop, but as it's not worth the cost of getting a new keyboard installed, I simply use a USB attached keyboard (widely available for about £10); I'd like to reinstall something other than Linux on it (which is a pain as I can't get used to it, and because the what's left of the original keyboard rarely works, I can't use the function keys, so can't get Linux to recognise the wireless card is on), but I managed to corrupt & then delete the partition with XP recovery on, and not worth paying for a new copy.
