The vehicle sales market has gone very strange in the UK recently.

You are talking I assume about cars that are nearly new (say 1/2 years old). The people who would buy these cars are hanging onto their current cars longer.

Also, UK insurance companies treat imported cars differently (in a bad way) - they are known as "grey market" over here.

Good luck

Hi Eric - we are shipping agents in Kent and handle hundreds of vehicle shipments to/from the UK every year.

The normal procedure for a shipment from Japan to the UK is as follows -

The auction house/exporter in Japan arranges deregistration of the cars and shipment to a UK port (e.g. Southampton, Bristol etc). Most cars go on roll on/roll off ships because this is the cheapest method.

When the cars arrive in the UK, we can arrange customs clearance on your behalf and pay the import duty and VAT to HM Customs. Import duty for cars ranges from 10-20% depending on the engine size etc and is calculated on the purchase cost plus shipping and marine insurance costs. VAT is 15% (rising to 17.5% in January) calculated on the purchase cost of the car plus shipping, marine insurance, the import duty and also an HM Customs allowance for UK landing charges.

For the customs clearance we will require commercial invoices showing the purchase cost, bill of lading and a copy of the Japanese registration documents

Before the cars arrive in the UK you would need to either get a VAT number (recommended) or EORI number for your business.

Once the cars are customs cleared, we can arrange delivery or you can collect from the port.

Before the cars can be registered in the UK, they will need to undergo an SVA test.

Hope this helps.
