I may be "time served" but no expert on the creation of the content, other than to have direct access to the data of traffic quality and consumer request for channel and micro-content of said niche as applicable and sorry Mike you are both wrong and right.
Wrong in that it is not sewn up in niche but is perhaps saturated in mainstream, it is essentially a supply and demand business and a smaller player can make an impact when they provide good content to a narrow-band niche. Yes you can get free porn in many places but for particular styles it can be (for the meantime) impossible to find and that's where well marketed content providers gain custom, they get to see what they want when they want without adverts or risk of malicious code if online. Whilst I shall not do into details of our own sites just imagine a member base of three thousand spending $1.99 a minute, for an average of seven minutes which drills down to a 37.1% share for the site with fifty to two hundred and fifty online at any one time whom will spend eventually not to mention the five hundred guests grazing. Every day, every day.
There is no doubt porn is available free widely, so if there's no need to pay for it then why do so many people pay for it...? You've been quite hostile and you are entitled to your opinion but I'll ask you also, what are your credentials in this area of the market to give such founded advice that we can take your 'short and sweet' comments seriously or are you just arguing with a stranger behind your keyboard for weekend kicks?

Quote your knowledge of the industry and then quote stats/data and name the companies that have the adult film industry sown up?
How would anyone with basic business knowledge or expert business knowledge for taht matter, know anything about the adult film industry if they do not work in that industry? That is another riduculous statement made by you without it being backed up.

Youporn - the 71st most visited website in the world.
Xvideos - the 58th most visited website in the world.
xhamster.com - the 67th most visited website in the world.
I am not going to try and justify or prove my knowledge to you, because your opinion is worthless to me.
These are just a few of the sites, and they are all more visited than ebay.co.uk - but i'm sure you are smart enough to make a successful online auction to compete with ebay - just make it niche.

Porn in my view is very much like the mobile application store(s).... 99.9999% its free, and people are happy with that, and will only part cash if its something very, very unique or good, otherwise why pay for something which is free - its why people wont make money developing a new iPhone or Android app UNLESS they can hit something which nobody ever has done before. Porn is the same.
If I was staying in a hotel room, why would I pay £10 or whatever for some really dodgy porn channel when I can get harder, better, more selective porn for free by switching on my laptop. Answer: I would only pay if I cant get hold of the free stuff at the time of want (i.e, no laptop, no wireless connection, etc etc etc).
But as I say, an interesting conversation.

there are still a few niche markets to explore i s'pose but the problem with niche in this instance is that it would probably be made illegal by the UK government before you got it distributed 
the other problem is that you're asking for someone to fund this venture, they wont, you'd have more luck in the states where the audience is bigger..or even japan where they like weird stuff and even include it in gameshows..whether you'd make any money or not, i dont know.
to be honest, i think you're better sticking with a small budget and concentrating on more basic adult videos purely for the UK market, cheap dvd stuff, no online content.
people still buy mucky dvds from ann summers, even if its for a laugh, so surely you can get in there.

Generic free tube sites, that feature every type of legal "niche" porn available. FOR FREE. Basically unless you want something that you could do jail time for watching - its on these sites.
Clearly you missed the point about the online auction, the point being - those sites are each more popular than ebay.co.uk - therefore you have a better chance of getting more traffic with your own online auction.
People like me with genuine business knowledge who genuinely know what they are talking about is what this forum is lacking, it's full of fake people who watch dragons den and think that qualifys them to input there worthless opinion.

I think the OP needs to look at his business plan in more detail £8k will not get him far in the market place he wants to enter.
The market place for retail adult DVD's in the UK is a very very difficult area to make any money in now.In this example there are only a few major players still making the big money.VOD has helped kill retail sales, coupled with the daft prices charged by the retail outlets.

hmm yes but you're talking 'BIG MONEY' i'm thinking that as this market is heavily saturated, or controlled by the bigger companies perhaps, it would be better he starts small, one man band style and build up from there, working his way in to the market and creating a brand for whatever niche he has in mind.
i think if he starts BIG in this market and spends tens of thousands, he'll still get nowhere because the big budget stuff is already being done and its a really difficult market to get in to for lots of reasons, morals, peoples views, objections etc etc.
he won't make any money for the first 6 months, but do many businesses? so why not start small, aim to have a few videos released via a website within 12 months and see what the uptake is before investing shed loads of cash in to it

I had a look at your previous posts to see if I could ascertain what business you are in. As you stated you have genuine business knowledge, that is backed up with your post about your business that I posted, and you genuinely know what you are talking about and this is what the forum is lacking. Yet you can't see any reason why you should be a member on this forum?
Being a member here does not give me a sense of self importance.

My business knowledge exceeds yours and when I make a good argument you turn to trawling through my previous posts to try and find a flaw in what I say, this basically tells me you ran out of things to say.

If the content is quality and what people want, then they will buy it.
I agree with you, the OP should shoot some content, put it up on clips4sale.com, backed up by a membership site with more content and see what the take up is. The £8k should cover this.

What argument, let alone a good one? You have stated that 'the adult film industry is sown up' when clearly the discussion is about the creation of niche fetish content, for sale via a membership site, which is a totally seperate sector of the adult industry.

I asked you 'List the big sites in the fetish market place that have it all 'sown up'.' and you post a list of generic tube sites with some fetish content, one which had 2800+ of 'fetish' videos, not a lot for a site that has a market sector sown up eh? and one tube that upsold to cam services!!!
You could have posted www.dominationtube.com (research this site and others like it OP) and at least got the genre right, or www.skintwo.co.uk

I never have and never will hide the fact that one of my businesses provides adult content for the in-room entertainment systems in the hotels.After all there is money to be made from it. Do you think I'd consider investing money in something I can easily find free in internet? The reality is - I can't find it, my research skills I consider way above average, so to my best knowledge, it doesn't exist.
The snag is I say "adult", you think "porn". Reality is that there are things you have no idea about, that show no sexual intercourse or even nudity, but are turning people on, more than anything mainstream adult industry had to offer since 1970.

Reason is simple - people in UK tend to like "classical" stuff, and if they happen to like something unusual - they will never be explicit about it, which is why I can't even imagine a regular UK citizen visiting the store and leaving it with my dvd.
US, Japan, and Germany are my main targets, and there's no easier, faster and cheaper way than having own webpage with monthly membership plans and some additional features like the ones Psl has mentioned (live cam, exclusive bespoke orders etc).
I'm being optimistic, I realized how I can resize the initial investment amount required, and can't wait to start something I was dreaming of since 2000.
Interesting discussion anyway, even if the initial question has been answered and revised.

I agree with the majority. Pornography has been available for free on the internet for a long time and there are a lot of niché markets that are fulfilled with free porn videos. I could never imagine what this niché market is that you will be targeting, but ask yourself one question. If there's demand, why is it not there already?

I've just took a look at one site, it has niché markets, and if it doesn't cover these markets, it links out to them already. It states at the top of the page it recieves 15 million page hits per day. This is a free to use pornography website, and it is one of many. It works similarly to YouTube too.

To be honest I would be tempted to say the opposite.
Everybody thinks it's really easy to set up a sex toys website and they will be millionaires in a week.
Reality is completly different and its easier to push a 30ton truck up a very steep hill.
We sell adult products as a sideline to the lingerie and the only ones that sell in any numbers are the weird and wonderful items.

I only know of one and it isn't too good, not many people go on it either. With good management and marketing on pornography websites, you could probably make it work. I'm sure people are more likely to want to pay for "Nikki's used panties" than paid pornography. I know nothing about this market but it could turn into a regular cash flow.
