Hi,

You could try Google Adwords. Its not free in the long term but you can quite easily find vouchers for £25 (and sometimes £50) free advertising. It's easy to set up.

Also Twitter and Facebook go without saying.

It depends on what you are selling but you could try free classified sites like Gumtree, Craigslist etc. Just do a Google search and you will find loads.

But in real terms if you can't afford the money you have to think outside the box and the money gets replaced with your time and effort. A lot depends on what type of traffic you need, generally targeted traffic you need to pay for but Adwords often doesn't work for that anyway as you need vast experience in using it to configure for that and in the end you hit the wall that says increase your bids.

google like to give the impression that Adwords is some sort of auction on keywords but that auction has reserve prices and if google doesn't concider your bid high enough they just don't show your advert even if you are the only person in the system to use that keyword. Thats why it looks easy and cheap but ends up a very expensive way to advertise for most people.

Many free ad sites are a complete waste of time. If you do use them then set up a free email account and use this only for your free ad accounts as you'll get spammed for ever more. The best way to get free advertising or exposure is with articles and press releases. Write them yourself and submit them to the article submission sites and directories. Same for online press releases. Also, if you can make a video then do that and upload it to Youtube. Put a link back to your website in the video's description.

I don't know of any programs out there. You could maybe strike a deal exchange with a web admin, so that he sells you ad space on his site and you provide something in return?

i have used the add words befor and didnt return nothing at all but gumtree has been a winner as it pops up on google (so totaly free )

I have to agree with you there about Adwords not being as good a deal as everyone makes out. I think Adwords is great for keyword research, especially if you can use a free voucher etc. to work on list of keywords that convert best. Then you can go on to use them to optimize your site for organic search results on those keywords. However, achieving a good profit margin solely using Adword clicks, would take anyone a good amount of time and experimentation to achieve. Not that it's impossible. It's just a long haul.

Yes Gumtree is a good option, but you do have to pay to place ads in certain categories after your first few posts. Still, if you get good feedback then it can be worth it. You just have to try and stand out from the competition as some categories tent to get flooded with people advertising the same thing.

Have you thought about trying an affiliate scheme? This is where other websites will link to you for free on the understanding that they get commission on any sales generated from you link.

There are affiliate services out there where you can search for websites that will provide a link. Clickbank is one of these. However they charge you a fee at the outset so I would recommend that you search for appropriate websites yourself and contact them directly and ask if they would like to be an affiliate for you. If they agree, you can create a link for them that identifies them using a parameter in the website address (a little programming knowledge is required here).

I tried this and it worked well at no cost, generating a decent number of incoming visitors for no money. You do have to put the leg work in however to email a number of webmasters and convince them that you will genuinely pay them a percentage of any sales that you generate. On the plus side, you get to be extremely picky about which sites you ask and choose the most suitable ones.
