Adding dog grooming salon to shop

We are about to move into new premises, we will have quite a lot of spare space available which would be ideal for a dog grooming salon, our shop is a pet boutique selling food & accessories.

Ideally we would like to rent the space out to an existing dog groomer, but I have no idea what to charge? Does anyone else have any experience with this?

You can either charge a flat rate, depending on what you think the room is worth either by the month, week or hour or ask for a percentage of the take. As long as the rate is attractive, there are plenty of dog groomers, it seems to be a growing industry. If they are charging £40 a time and it takes an hour to do, there is profit to be had for all.

I know pet shops who have lost business because the groomer isn't very good and they can't get rid of them easily because they've rented a room. People will associate the groomer with your business. Also you need to know what sort of groomer you have on site as there are different levels of qualification, and some groomers won't have enough knowledge to do show style cuts, handstrip or handle difficult dogs. Some dogs will take a lot longer than an hour to groom properly - it can take 3-5 hours for instance to hand strip some of the larger breeds. Ifyou're getting a groomer in who only clips then they would be much faster, but ideally you'd go for a groomer more highly qualified. That way you hopefully will get show dogs, whose owners tend to spend a lot more money on pet products than 'pet' owners. I'm not sure about rental costs, but could you consider setting it up as a grooming room yourself and taking on staff?
