Don't know whether it's me getting older, the pressures of the tax year end or the sudden sunny weather, but it seems like AWEB has been infultrated by more snipes and put downs lately.

Just read through a few any answers threads and each time there's been some real digs in there, which were completely unneccesary.

Our very own Elaine has posted an opportunity on there and someone even felt the need to post a response slating her choice of name for the business. Why did they feel it was neccessary to respond if not interested, I really don't know.

Anyways, back to the grumpy cupboard ;)

Hey thanks Stuart.

I just think all publicity is good publicity. ;)

The lady who posted did sound a little grumpy. I felt a bit sorry for her really :p

I get a lot of stick from other accountants about the name but funny enough, clients love it. Guess who I sell to

Anyway it is only a name - gets me noticed.

But clients stay for the service :p

Someone been givign you stick about the name? What's it got to do with them? You are perfectly entitled to pitch, price and market however you want - who are they to say otherwise? Probably the same bores who use the institute snobbery / hierachy.

Give your target market what they want, at a price they will pay. Too many of the aweb users try to tell people what they want rather than listen and provide.

The OP is a woman - I have been talking offline with her about moving her business forward and she is quite embarrassed at the furore she has caused!

Don't think she's anything to be embarrassed about TBH. She asked a perfectly reasonable question in my opinion

I know - but there are a lot of there that provide comment even when not asked and have a very high opinion of their view and themselves :p

However I could not possibly say who this is :eek:

I know I did question Elaine about the business model when she first came to the forums but after she explained to me her business model it made perfect sense....as I said in another thread on here....each person has their own business model and if it works for them that all that really matters:D:D

The mentor thread is a great online battle, very entertaining.

Yes I've been following that thread with enormous interest.

You have to admit that Bob does bring it on himself in some respects.

Bob comes from the same school as Mark Allen (Chairman of CIMA MIPS for those who don't know the name from Adam) and Mark suffered the same slating a while ago for defending the Probiz network.

The vast majority of regular expert advisors on AW appear to come from the traditional accountancy practice regime but irrespective of that they should, when talking to Peers, give them the courtesy of debate without personal attack.

I have looked at both Bobs offering albeit at its inception, and Probiz(as well as many others) and just like the Franchise consideration find that many of the deliverables can be done without spending the sums they are talking about. I don't put them down because for some, they are perfectly valid business propositions.

I agree that it works for some, trouble is those that arent interested are told they are wrong.

Different people have different objectives, wants, and needs from their accountancy businesses and not all want the business model being advocated. That doesnt make them 'wrong'.

I know Bob well and have learned a lot from him personally, its a shame to see him taking such a pounding though as you say he is bringing a lot of it on himself.

I seem to have missed a trick there - I could have been rude to Elaine with an anonymous posting. There again, if she didn't know it was me, there would have been no fun in it! :p (Only joking, Miss E!)

AW is home to some pathetic characters, who can't see anything working outside of their own little world. Some of the reaction to posters on there is inexcusable - sure there are some dull questions asked by people who are apparently in public practice, but the simple answer is that if you don't like the question, don't answer it.

There are some excellent contributors - Euan McClenahan for example - and there are some complete idiots. I used to think that it was a useful resource, but spend less and less time on there these days.

Actually I wasn't referring to you at all.

Did you really think I was :|:|

They are having a go at me again:

I do wish they would get a life!

Who is one taking the profession to a low level?

At least good old Fairie Girl is talking some sense.:)

Why should they care what you choose to call the business. And, if no one wanted to be associated with your business you'd have no clients.

Sod 'em as we say in Yorkshire - you go for it Elaine;)

Thanks Stuart.

I kind of don't get why they said anything - surely it just shows them up and how unprofessional they are?

Either unprofessional or just plain crap business people. They will have started their practices offering exactly the same services at similar prices to the competition down the road. They'll have no flair for business and will probably get very excited about a typo on the deferred tax note on page 9 of a set of accounts.

Not that I'm stereotyping :D:D

Oh blimey - you are an accountant with a sense of humour as well. A rare breed

I think that the people on accounting web stereotype themselves.

Anything that is a teeny bit different from ye olde traditional practice is immediately jumped on by a load of self righteous luddites. Look at the flak that Bob Harper has received recently - not that he can't look after himself mind! - and loads of other examples.

I've heard it said, from people like 2020 that only 5-10% of firms are willing to actively market and introduce new services.

Good!

Bang right David. We should actually be celebrating the stereotypical AWEB types. It means that there's a better marketplace for those of us with something different to offer.

Also consider that the AWEBers are probably in the most "modern" 50% of accountants. After all, they have found that the internet exists :p:D

I think, No I know you're right.

We instigate a Competitor Intelligence Report when we take on a practice (I won't go in to details as I've already done so several times on AW) i.e. we look at proactive competition in that particular area usually thowing up about 50 Practices. Of the many we have analysed it's very rare to come across practices with effective marketing.

However having said that we are acting for many practices across the UK and our enquiry levels (without additional marketing on our part) since January have been amazing.

Mike

Good points boys and actually the very reason that I launch CheapAccounting in the first place.

I just thought that (in the main) accounting hadn't moved on in the last 20 years from when I started (I know I don't look that old ).

Look at the rest of the world and what has happened - great advances in comms and IT.

I bet some off them think a blackberry is what you get in a pie

Well that a surprise - do you think that some of them have just realised that there is a recession on?

I saw the adverse comments your post on AW received.

She clearly failed to understand the fact that understanding your marketplace and then creating a USP to service it, is a fundamental marketing concept that all succesful businesses must implement. - Even Accountants

You're right to an extent Elaine. But in general we have three groupings: New Start Ups (lots of them), Enlightened and Progressive and finally Desperate.

We're very lucky that we're now able to choose but as I pointed out in an earlier thread even a champion jockey won't win the National on an old nag.
