I love email marketing as a tool to get to know my subscribers and make money for myself at the same time, although it took me a few years to figure out exactly how to use email marketing.
The BIG thing you have to remember with email marketing is that the reason someone has signed up to your email list is to get to know more about you, your company and what you can offer them. Its not a case of what you can get from your subscriber, its what you can offer your subscriber to turn them into a fan of you or your company.
How to get subscribers
You have to give something away for free to entice your readers onto your list. Dont make it a piece of crap that you bought from a plr site (unless its really good), make it something thats going to be worth spending time reading or watching. Some ideas you can give away:
A free ebook in your niche
A free training video
An email e-course in your niche
If you are using a program like aweber, put your settings to single optins so you will capture more names on your list, theres a big debate about this post here double optin vs single optin
Obviously driving traffic to your site will get you more subscribers and theres hundreds of ways to drive traffic, just google some ways and get going.
Swapping ads
If you are looking for an extremely quick way to build your list start doing swaps or buying solo ads from website owners within your niche.
Basically a sawp is you sending out an email to your list advising of a great website which will link to your swapping partners landing page and sign up page, and they do the same for you.
Obviously you have to build up your list to a few thousand before you can offer a swap, however you can buy a solo ad to start building your list. A solo ad is you buying an email ad from a website owner who will then send it to his list which directs to your landing page with your offer and signup page. You can literally build up your email list by thousands by using this strategy.
How to treat your list
When you think of your list it can be difficult to think of them as real people, so one of the first things I would do is have an male and female avatar in mind when your are sending your emails.
An avatar is your ideal subscriber in the male and female form.
When you are thinking of an avatar answer these questions:
What age are they?
Are they married?
Do they have children?
What job do they have?
How much do they earn?
What car do they drive?
What products do they like to buy?
Get as up close and personal as you can with your avatar.
Now, this may sound like a silly exercise to do, but believe me its well worth spending the 15 minutes on each male and female avatar. What this does is lets you have an image of someone in your head when your are sending out your emails, and your relationships with your subscribers will be so much better.
Most list owners treat their list as a list and not as a person, thats why having an avatar is crucial, so you personalise your subscribers.
Sending out emails
Your very first email will be your welcome email and the link to your free offering such as your ebook or video.
Also in your first email set the tone from the beginning advising that you will be sending out emails every day, every other day or every week, whatever is your want.
Also at this stage let them know that you will send out personal emails about yourself, blog posts and offers which you think they might enjoy. Tell them how many emails they can expect to receive per week, dont be too scared to send too many. There are many rabid markets out there that would not tire of receiving emails twice per day such as the golfing market.
After your first email send out another email a day after or a few days after giving more details about yourself i.e. your story about why you started the blog, site or company. This builds up more truist and gets them to recognise your email name.
Readers dont open lists because of the subject line, they open it because of the From box i.e. your name. the more they get to know you the more of your emails will get opened.
Within the first few weeks send out an email asking them what they would like from you e.g. what type of products, what type of advice, etc etc
I have an autoresponder series with 4 emails as soon as someone signs up:
Email 1 Welcome and free offer (day 1)
Email 2 Philosphy of my site (day 2)
Email 3 My story (day 3)
Email 4 Why did you join and what can I do for you (Day 4)
After the autoresponder, and during it, I send out at least 3 emails per week to my list, but it wasnt always like this.
I was scared to send out even 1 email per week for fear of upsetting the subscribers. You have to get over this from the beginning. If someone unsubscribes from your list because youre sending them out too many emails, then so what it doesnt matter. Honestly, get over the fear of sending emails, however you also have to be careful that every email has a purpose.

Okay thats me for now, can you tell I love email marketing J
Any questions let me know, be happy to answer.

How to make money from your list
- Set up an affiliate account with a product within your niche that you really like. Typically this can be an ebook, a video course, or whatever and you can get a percentage of anybody that buys from your affiliate link.
- Set up your own product and show the benefits of your products to your subscribers, using stories, testimonials, and media news stories.
- Rent out your list to someone within your niche and charge them a flat fee, but only do this once you have checked the offer out. I charge $500 per email to my list of 16,000 and I vet the product to make sure it is good enough for my subscribers, if I didnt, I would get a ton of unsubscribes.
- Offer exclusive discounts to readers with a time limited offer e.g. 20% discount for 24 hours. This can bring in a lot of sales if done correctly.
