A call from google!

I have had a few of my clients tell me that they have had a call from google about adwords campaign. And it is happening more.

What is this? Is this just some SEO/SEM marketing cold caller missrepresenting themselves as working from google.

Last week I had a client call me and ask if I had the number for google...

Google are getting better at customer service - I have regular chats with adwords people - larger accounts are assigned a contact who you can talk to whenever you like. They'll also optimise your campaign for you (although I must admit that I redid mine after they'd done it and the results are much better now)

Hi

I doubt very much Google will contact you direct unless you have spoken to their support team based in Ireland regarding a problem with your Adwords account.

There is a local company in Altrincham or Sale who pretends to be from Google and offers you Adwords for a fixed fee for local keywords. I have spoken to Google and they are not associated with this company at all. It is just a sales pitch for their sales people to sell their service to you.

There is an adwords company working in partnership with Google but I forget their name.

There's at least one company claiming that, but it's a lie.

There are a few dodgy types out there who either pretend they're google, claim they're partners of google or that Google sells them clicks at a discount.

Avoid at all costs.

Had a couple of these too (or more specifically, some customers have had a couple of these, and passed them on to us!). The reaction when you chat for a while, then calmly explain that you are, in fact, the web developer - and/or that you handle the adwords account on a professional basis is.. well.. it amuses me, anyway!

I was actually quite annoyed the first time this happened, because the customer in question was absolutely convinced that they had been told the person calling was "calling from Google, about AdWords" - when I spoke to them, they definitely declared the name of their company, but in a somewhat devious way - it would be easy to misunderstand.

Oh well. Telemarketing and cold calling is still very much alive!

Dear ZoeZoe

Just been wary about companies contacting you pretending to be from Google as this is just a sales tactic to get a sale out of you. Google will only speak to you if you have raised an issue with them through their Office in Ireland regarding Adwords ie Pay-per-Click Campaigns.

P.S I do have a number for Google if you need it? Please let me know.

We had Google call us.

They contacted me on my mobile number (never given out, except to a select few) and I contacted G direct to confirm it was genuine, which it was. The email address they used was @google.com (not gmail or googlemail) and on contacting their support desk directly it was confirmed to be genuine call.

The reason for the contact was due to our potential high value spend. If all our campaigns maxed out we could spend £500 per day.

The offer was a month of free assistance to optimise our campaign.

I considerd it for about 2 weeks and researched whether or not I was going to be conned and decided to go with them for the month.

On the Friday I spkoe to them to confirm and authorised access to our account. Due to the size of our campaign they said they would review it over the weekend and get back to me by mid next week. Three weeks later I removed their authorisation due to no response from them.

So in answer to the posts here:
1 - It could be genuine:)
2 - It isn't worth doing it as they just don't respond:(
