Ive scanned my computer with norton security scan and it shows that thee are 6 viruses on my laptop. I have selected the fix button but norton cannot remove the viruses.
I have tred scanning with another software (spyware doctor) but it cannot pick up the viruses.

Does anybody know of free virus removal software that might work.

thanks

Try combofix - it cleans up lots and works really well.

Be warned though - it will leave 1/100 laptops/pcs Windows install corrupt after it removes the virus. (The virus attaches itself to windows files, which are cleaned by combofix)

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Once cleaned - uninstall Norton using the Norton Removal tool - http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then buy and install Kaspersky Internet Security. Norton is not good!

We've seen loads of machines with viruses which were 'supposed' to be protected by Norton.....

I would re-install windows re-formating your hd on the way. Then make sure you keep up to date with windows updates and install Avast and windows defender.

Theres a wee program out there called malwarebytes. Its free and excellent in detection. Use it along side Avira. Another one to try is Threatfire.
I will back this one up also.

My mother's laptop got invected with a virus after she clicked on one of those "your computer is invected" banners!
She had Norton installed which didn't work, and I couldn't clean it with MS Defender nor Norton, but MalwareBytes cleaned it nicely.

She now has a nice clean laptop being protected by MalwareBytes and Microsoft Defender together. Expensive Norton been kicked into touch :p

I didn't know anyone still used Norton.

Once the machine is clean again get a copy of adaware as well.

Am I the only one who hasn't ever been infected with anything?

Personally this would be my last resort.

Try starting in safe mode to see if you can remove the virus that way. If that fails try malwarebytes. I've used it a few times and can highly recommend it.

agree with others; norton not good!

but...before you remove and install anything else boot up into safe mode and get you important files off the infected machine and then run a full scan. once this is done and if norton dosent remove the infections us one of the other recommendations - personally i'd format and reinstall windows straight after backing up files as i'd never trust an infected machine.

I have norton installed on my laptop but a windows security alert keeps popping up which reads: "Windows firewall has detected unauthorised activity, but unfortunately it cannot help you remove viruses, keyloggers and other spyware threats that steal your personal information from your computer".

Would installing Malwarebytes help and can it be installed along side Norton.

    Thanks

The antivirus that I normally recommend is Avast - which has a free home user version. The thing that I like about it is that it does a boot up scan which eliminates all those viruses that are TSR - (terminate and stay resident).

If you run it and it finds windows files that have been damaged or repaired then you can just run a windows repair - you will not have to reload your applications again as the windows repair replaces those files that have been damaged.

As for the spyware problem - Most antispyware programs are spyware in themselves. I would recommend Ad-aware by lavasoft or NoAdware.net. I have been very happy with these products.

Norton Antivirus is not the best software out there - although the symantec corporate anti-virus is rather good. I am not knocking their product but the best software they have released as yet has been the "Norton Removal Tool" - this allows you to remove their software products effectively.
