123-reg hosting

Hi

Has anybody any experience of hosting with 123-reg....we have five sites with them at the moment and all five sites seem to be abysmally slow.

The problem has been recurring and intermitant over a period of time and it is driving me mad and undoubtedly losing us sales.

I have had a quick search through here for any recomendations for hosting services and 'Vidahost' seems to be heavily recommended, but I don't want to end up 'out of the frying pan and into the fire', not least the headache of moving five sites and email addresses to find ourselves in no better position. :|

Any thoughts or experiences would be much appreciated.

:)

I only have experience with 123-reg for registrations of domains. I use a seperate hosting company xilo. www.xilo.net. I have a reseller account with them and manage all my domains and email through them They recently upgraded their servers so are very quick at web page loading.

123-reg are great for domain registration but pants at hosting.

Your sites are jammed onto a server with a zillions others. There are plenty of better hosts to choose from.

Plug now. I've recently moved to open mind hosting (Phil's a member here), the serrver is blisteringly fast and support is astounding. End of Plug.

You pay peanuts and you get monkeys. You pay for a low cost host and you will get naff hosting.

Hi

Thanks for the quick replies....

I like the idea of 'blistering fast' I will take a look at 'open mind hosting' and of course 'xilo'

Just a couple of questions re Vidahost if anyone is able to answer...

1) Are Vidahost servers in the UK

2) Is the 'Vidahost' offer to move sites for you as good as it sounds :) - has anyone had any experience of this - (and no we are not using 123's web builder packages )

3) Is it a necessity to transfer domain names as well as hosting to Vidahost for them to facilitate the moving of sites for you ?

Many thanks

1) Yup, servers are in Maidenhead along with their offices. Dom and Seb are around near 24/7 to answer any queries.
2) Never used it myself
3) It wouldn't be a deal breaker but I would give them a call to ask, they are actually as cheap as 123-reg for domains so you could save a few ££ by moving your domains to them as well.

Thanks Faevilangel!

Yes, in two leading datacentres (including one used by multiational corporations and parts of the stock exchange) close to our office.

2) Is the 'Vidahost' offer to move sites for you as good as it sounds :) - has anyone had any experience of this - (and no we are not using 123's web builder packages )
We'll take care of the entire process - one of my colleagues essentially moves sites full time!

Unlike some companies we don't blame issues on your site if it doesn't work immediately (99% of the time they do of course) - we'll debug it and figure out what's happening.

3) Is it a necessity to transfer domain names as well as hosting to Vidahost for them to facilitate the moving of sites for you ?
No, although our pricing is great and it makes management easier but it's totally up to you :)

Thanks Faevilangel and thanks Dominic Taylor.

I think 'Vidahost' has a new customer!

I will have a good read of the website Dominic and look at transfering five hosted sites and their domain names to you.

This is something I should have done a long time ago as 123-reg hosting is as 'fisicx' has said totally, totally pants.

A couple of the domain names are due for renewal, so it's probably a good time!

I use Hostgator for my hosting, with some domains (mainly .com) registered with them and some (mainly .co.uk) registered with 123-reg. The main benefit I found with Hostgator is that you pay for a hosting package (I use 'baby croc' - twee eh?) and have one URL registered as your 'main' one, then you can add as many add-on domains as you like. Also you can have domains registered with other providers (like 123-reg) hosted, you just have to change the nameservers (in 123-reg this is done withing the user control panel and is really easy). I have had very good service from them over about the last five years and technical backup is A1. And there's a very good control panel included that makes 123-reg's look like a Noddy book. Give 'em a go!

I have heard good things about hostgator in terms of their support, although they do crowd their servers. The main issue with using hostgator as a UK business though if is you have a .co.uk hosted on a server which isn't in the UK (e.g. US with HostGator) then it negatively impacts your SERP ranking. As the majority of your visitors are also likely to be from the UK then the response time they get will also likely be worse than if the server was based in the UK, even if the server is fast.

If you're after truly fast Linux web hosting then you'd probably want to look at a host that runs LiteSpeed instead of standard apache. Server load is obviously a big factor too. I'm happy to answer any questions if you have any.

I hope that helps.

Hi,

My name is Ray & I work for 123-reg. 123-reg are always trying to improve the services we supply to our customers, so we would really appreciate some more information with regards to the speed issues you have been experiencing. If you have not already created a support ticket about this issue, we would be very grateful if you could do so by going to our support site.

Clicking on hosting in the main topics section, then click on website diagnostics. Then follow the steps on the only article that is shown on the page.

I tried to post a link however the forum would not allow it.

Hi

I am currently have three websites with 123 Reg. Slow isn't a good enough word to describe their web servers. Does anyone else know of a decent UK web hosting company that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. I have raised numerous support tickers with 123 Reg, but 30 seconds to loads a pay is costing me customers. Any advice welcomed

If makingaliving reads this I would love to know how he got on? if he moved? who he moved to? Are they any better?

Cheers

Wow! That was quick. I just checked out latehosting.com and if their own website is anything to go by, it was practically instant in the speed it loaded.

It would be interesting to compare how quickly some of their clients websites perform in comparison, but perhaps Round25 can name a couple.

It might be worth mentioning that whilst the first seems to be a UK based company, their servers appear to be in Germany and the second listed an affiliate link (which does not seem to work) to a US hosting company.

first is a UK company with servers in UK, Germany and the US according to there website, and my hosting with them is UK.

The second is a affiliate link, but your right it is a US company.

The speed of their own site isn't really an indicator of the speed of their shared hosting, as it won't be in the same environment. A good example is a lot of the pile them high hosts, like 123 reg themselves, which pay a lot of attention to their own site but overcrowd their servers and pay little attention to their customers.

I'd argue even if the company provides servers in the UK, you're still best off with a UK web host if most of your visitors are from the UK. Although many hosts claim 24/7 support, you'll find a lot outsource support in the night to low cost countries or people that give stock answers. If you're using a US company for example, that could well then be during your peak time and when you need help most.

Of course you could just go with a host that offers true 24/7 support.

If you're after fast web hosting, then obviously quality and lack of overcrowding is important. In addition to that you may want to look for hosts that run LiteSpeed web server, or other web servers which can serve pages much faster than standard Apache. CloudLinux is another premium technology which can make shared hosting more reliable and stable.

If you've got any questions I'm happy to help. Good luck with your move!

Hello Lordliverpoo,

My name is Nerys and I work here at 123-Reg.

I am really sorry to hear that you have been experiencing issues with your website. Can I please ask you to raise a support ticket, containing the dates and times you have experienced issues and any error messages that are seen. This will help us to investigate and find out what is causing the issue for you.

You can raise a support ticket by visiting the 123-Reg website > selecting "Help" > selecting "Ask a question"

I do apologise however I cannot post links on this account.

Regards,
Nerys
